Train from Schiphol airport to Maastricht

Arriving into Schiphol by flight, we are planning to go by train as follows:

Day 1 -Schiphol to Bruges

Day 2 - Bruges to Maastricht

Day 3 - Maastricht to Amsterdam

Could we have some advice is this is the right direction or it may be more efficient to do:

Day 1 -Schiphol to Bruges

Day 2 -Bruges to Maastricht

Day 3 - Maastricht to Amsterdam

Look forward to some expert advice in terms of travel time and cost for both routings.

Thanks and regards

Thanks for the advice. From browsing the official Holland Tourism website, there do not seem to be any travel card other than the OV chip card. This card merely provides convenience for travel but not savings on travel.

Absolutely. The only way to get discounts for tourists are the odd daycard sales at chain stores, but currently there is none of those...

Thanks again for the prompt reply. We are on the verge of buying via the website of Hispeed NL for a 2nd class full fare ticket from Schiphol airport to Bruges (Belgium). Noticed that the transfer time is 2 minutes at Rotterdam Central Platform 3 to Platform 4. We are reasonably agile people in our 50's and will be carrying a cabin size luggage weighing not more than 20 kg each. Would need your kind advice on:

1) our chances of not making the transfer between platforms. Are these 2 platforms back to back to each other or they are across each other, ie, separated by a rail track?

Look forward to some guidance.

2) Would you also advise for our return travel from Bruges to Maastricht, our hotel instructs us to arrive at Maastricht Central Station, when booking do we select "Maastricht" or "Maastricht Randwyck" for our arrival destination?

Thanks and regards

1. Your trains are on the same platform, no tracks in between.

2. Maastricht is the main train station.

And no need to buy tickets in advance unless you are taking the Thalys high speed train to Antwerp and then connecting to Bruges. There is no cost savings and some people have problems using the NS site with a foreign credit card.

Thanks but I am aware it is public holiday on 21 July in the Nederlands. Probably that is the reason the cheaper tickets are not available. We do not want to risk having to pay lst class tickets on the day of travel itself, however, we noted your kind warning that we might encounter difficulty with foreign credit card. We will still try to buy in advance online.

If you are taking the InterCity train it can't sell out. The cost is the same wether you buy your ticket in advance or not and is not restricted to a particular train. 21/7 is a holiday in Belgium not the Netherlands.

Oh I see. In that case do you advise that I buy in advance the rail ticket for the Bruges to Maastricht sector instead. Thanks.

Well that's not needed either as it's normal Belgian intercity trains (and a local train Liege-Maastricht). Here too no seat reservations, they'll never sell out, and theoretically no guarantee for a seat if you have a ticket (you might have to stand for a while). Price on the day itself is same as with prebooking.
