What area to stay within Amsterdam?

Myself and two friends will be traveling in spring to Amsterdam for a week. We will be using public transportation to tour the city. What area of the city is recommended for a central location? Also any recommendations on 2 bedroom rentals is appreciated.

Anywhere within the main canal rings is central and within walking distance of everything. Give more details on dates and budget and you'll get more help on here.

we stayed at https://www.flipkey.com/properties/6879174/ on our last trip this fall and loved it. I have stayed in the Jordaan before but really enjoyed our stay in the Pijp and will stay at this houseboat again. we had such fun sitting out front watch all the people on bikes going by. the neighbor has grocery store, bars and restaurants.

the subway was only a few blocks away and Central was only 4 stops away.

For a central location you might want a ground central location such as the museum zone-Leidesplein area. This area is close to virtually everything you will want to see. Museums, park, nightlife, canals, train station, etc etc.

The Jordaan zone, canal belt east zone , dam sq royal palace zone make up what Scott referred to as the central canal area. These are also'prime locations.

Stay somewhere where you can walk everywhere but can easily catch a tram now and then if you need. Also IMO stay somewhere where you can easily return to your room during the day or early evening. Let's face it you could be out and about a good 10-14 hours walking and enjoying------being able to return ----come and go---easily during that time period is IMO very important.

The worst mistake IMO is staying somewhere sterile or boring or will require a 30+ min commute just to get to somewhere interesting.. So no airport or office complex hotels located miles outside the city.
