advise for safe central area

I need help booking hotel for my 20 y/o daughter and 3 friends planning a trip to Amsterdam for 2 days. Need advice where they should stay, looking for moderate hotel in central location. They do not want anything fancy, just clean and comfortable. I would like to keep them in a central area; safety is key. Any suggestions which area of Amsterdam is best for them? Thanks, T

I hear you, but tell me just how bad is it? I mean does everyone "indulge"? The main purpose of the trip is to visit one of their grandmothers, and Amsterdam was a stop along the way. I myself plan to go in Feb, are coffee houses all the city offers? They are fairly responsible, and have spent summer aboard in college studies. I appreciate the heads-up though, will give some thought. T

hi , the issue of "safe" comes up time and time again. All central areas of Amsterdam are safe. As is always pointed out just use common sense as you would in any city. Perhaps browse the hotel lists and come back with a few options and I'll happily offer you my opinion ... geoff

I stay at the Ibis Hotel right next to centraal station. Its handy if you are traveling by train. It is clean, mordern and has elevatorsl They also do not allow the use of soft drugs on their property.

Tricia

I don't know if you have this sorted yet, but I would recommend the HI Stayokay Amsterdam hostel at Vondelpark, where they can book a 4-person private room for $99

www.hihostels.com/dba/hostel040001.en.htm

It is in a safe area, near Leidesplein and the Museum District and can be reached by tram from Centraal Station

I'd advise *not* staying at the other HI hostel, Stadsdoelen, which is a dosshouse.

They may find it diffcult to book a hotel for only 2 days as many insist on a mininum 4-day stay.

Thanks for the advise on hotels. Will look into both. Can the private room at HI Stayokay Amsterdam hostel be booked for both male and female?

I'm not too sure about that. I would have thought that it should be OK.

I'm not exactly sure what was said in the removed messages above, but I gather it was cannabis and coffeeshop related in some way by your reply.

Yes there are coffeshops around the city, as there are around the rest of The Netherlands (not as prominent in other areas) but if you were heading towards one, you'd know by the painted face of the building and pungent smell, and therefore could not accidentally go into one. So your daughter & friends will not enter one by accident.

As for safety, I've found amsterdam to be very safe, and anyone I've spoken to also believes it is very safe too. The Red Light District is not particularily unsafe, but you just need to be careful with handbags, wallets etc.. incase of pickpockets, as you would in any other major city. However, in the Red Light district there are often large numbers of police moving around, so they are never far away. A tip which I was told on my first visit to amsterdam was, if something bad is happening, just keep shouting police as one is likely to be within earshot. I find the less populated areas of amsterdam a bit more intimidating as there is less of a police presence. In my opinion I would prefer to walk through Amsterdam including the Red Light District between 10pm and 4am than I would at any time in London or Birmingham (no disrespect to either).

As for hotels, the ibis by the train station is clean, comfortable and not expensive. The Mutalali is usually ok prices but some rooms are in need of a bit of TLC, though others I've been in have been ok. The Terminus is one of my favourites, reasonable prices, 5 min walk from Centraal Station, and for safety you are 2/3 doors away from the police station.

Good luck

With regard to safety and the Red Light District. Several years ago I stayed at the Stadsdoelen Youth Hostel in Kolvenierburgswaal, from where it is only about a 20 min walk via the periphery of the RLD to Centraal Station. I did this at about 7 am as I couldn't sleep properly in the dormitory at said establishment.

Whilst I was walking from the youth hostel to the station, I found myself surrounded by junkies all on cold turkey needing some money for their first hit of the day. I offered some coins then came the reply 'paper!'. Just as I was about give them the only note (50 guilders) I had in my wallet (which they would probably have pinched anyway), a cop car turned up and they all melted away into the background, from whence they came. Almost like something out of Hill Street Blues I thought

My advice on safety in Amsterdam. DON'T walk through the RLD early in the morning. Once business has got going for the day and the pimps have taken up their pitches on each street corner, it is a lot safer. They don't want junkies frightening off the punters and if you don't hassle the pimps, they won't hassle you. Walking through the RLD in the afternoon is generally quite safe.

At any rate, I wouldn't stay in that area, which is why I have recommended another. Leidesplein is a better area in which to stay. So go for the Vondelpark hostel, not the Stadsdoelen one.
