Daytrips from Amsterdam

Well our time is getting close. Hotel is booked - decided to stay at the Radisson Blue. We are now looking for ideas for day trips to see some more of Holland.

We are spending six nights in Amsterdam so we are looking for 2 good trips to take in some other sights. Two that have been suggested are Delft and Markem. What do you think of these and are their other suggestions.

We both enjoy walking and I am an avid photographer of landscapes/buildings.

Thanks in advance.

If you want to see the world's premiere site for windmills (which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage site) then I would suggest a day trip out to Kinderdijk. It's soooo beautiful! Easiest to get there if you access to a car. About 1 hour southeast of Amsterdam.

Hello,

For the walking part of your question, have a look at my page about walking in the Netherlands: members.virtualtourist.com/m/6117e/312/

There's also a description of a nice walk around Marken.

Personally, I really like walking in the dunes!

Have fun,

Dennis

Another suggestion:

Alkmaar - famous for its cheese market on Fridays - but it also has a beautiful old centre with lots of nice buildings and sites (see for instance my info about 'Wildemanshofje': http://members.virtualtourist.com/vt/tfr/1/312/6/1fc393/)

You could make a combination with the village of Bergen and do some walking in the dunes as suggested before.

If visiting Marken, make a stop in Broek in Waterland, just north of Amsterdam; it is such a quaint village with wooden houses and almost without tourists.

happy travels

Jaap

For a complete change of scenery, visit Groningen - two hours by train from Amsterdam and excellent for a day trip; it has a fantastic museum, too.

Also, may sure that you have a day at the beach: either to Zandvoort or Bloemendaal an Zee!!

Oh dear look despite her best efforts to advertise their website again all the posts have dissapeared again. Bad luck Stuka or Stefka or whatever your name is.

We took a whole day coach tour - the Best of North and South Holland.

www.thebestofholland.nl Which went around a small part of Amsterdam and to Marken, Volendam, Edam, The Hague, Madurodam, Delft. An overview of these plus much commentry and time for photographs was well worth it for the limited time you have.

Alkmaar, as mentioned, can be accessed by train, coach, or car. Be there early Friday mornings to view the Cheese Market and before the coaches arrive so you can nab the best viewing spot .

You can catch a bus from Alkmaar to visit Egmond aan Zee to walk the dunes, find wild? horses and wooly cattle. The dunes are beautiful.

Or hire a car to visit Muiden and Muiderslot, Naarden and the fort then drive on to Het Loo at Appeldoorn. If there is still time visit the Hooge Veluwe for free cycling in this huge park, plus the Kroller-Mueller Museum and Sculpture Garden
