advance booking? hotels and attractions

I will be in Europe next July and August and am just starting to think about the big picture for the trip. For now I want to uncover any must-do things that either require advance booking or are only a once a week occurrence (Gouda on Thursday for example). Let me know if you can think of any.

Also, is it possible to keep a flexible itinerary and only book lodging a few days in advance as we head towards Amsterdam from London.

We are experienced off the beaten path travelers with 2 young teens if that helps. This is our first time in Holland.

You can book as close to,the time of arrival as you like.

Some where in AMS there will be a room.

But by not planning ahead you risk having much more limited choices and paying a lot more money.

July and somewhat less so for August is prime hotel time in Amsterdam.

Reagarding advance booking:Anne Frank house,Van Gogh and Rijkmuseum if you are interested to visit any of them..

I wouldn't wait to book a few days in advance..July/August usually are the most popular months for travellers so it can be quite tough..I usually book some months in advance(mostly because i have something specific in mind) but that's just me..Many hotels also have early booking specials,so may be worth..

If you are in doubt just do not do a pre paid.

While a pre paid can be a lot cheaper or a little cheaper it is hardly worth it if you are going to cancel.

Do your home work now. Pick a few within your budget and desires. And sometime before your trip do a reservation that you can cancel.

Then hope you do not have to at the last minute.

What type of room or rooms and what type of budget?

John i don't know if you are referring to my post about early booking but i wasn't talking about pre-paid and non refundable rates..I was able to book some hotels really early and got better rates which still could cancel 2-3 days before check in time.

Greg I was not addressing your post.

I was following up on my own as far as what they should do. Our advice was not at odds.

I would though suggest that someone needs to be careful that they do not book a pre paid when they do not mean to.

Many times those hotel sites are a little less than real clear about this aspect of a good deal.

Thanks guys. Helpfull to know Anne Frank house,Van Gogh and Rijkmuseum require prebooking.

You confirmed what I suspected about it being high season. We typically stay in small inns and have to pay up front. But you got me thinking about trading that for the ability to be flexible on our travel dates and staying in traditional hotels that would not typically require a prepay.

A lot is going to depend on that budget.

What is it?
