Suggestions for a kids first introduction to Amsterdam?

I used to visit Amsterdam quite regularly, about once a month pre children, as I worked in the travel trade.

Fast forward 10 years and I'm looking to take my family, including my 11 year old and 8 year old to Amsterdam for their first proper visit.

We'll be staying for 2 nights, but 3 days in total. Where are the best places to take them so that they get a good introduction to this fabulous city?

Anne Frank house for defintite. I've even bought the Diary so that my 11 year old has a really good understanding of the impact on Jewish families in WW2, but would love some other really good child/ family friendly suggestions.

Many thanks

For me first off would be and was a canal boat tour.

Just at dusk being the best time IMO. The lights as they come on will add to their 80 mins or so.

With my kids it was walking walking walking.

Sadly we never got to see the actual child activites or venues.

They did see the Old Heineken Museum not the Experience and the RLD.

Two of those youngens even found their way into a coffeeshop while out walking alone

Although that info came to me after the both had ther own children.

And no there was no 18 age limit then.

I am not sure there was any age limit. One was still in middle school.

But they all took a wrong path years later. Not a toker among them as adults.

I may not be the best one to offer advice now that I think on it. :-)

Good one :-)

Well, mr JohnMD, that's my experience also, kids usually tend to rebel against what their parents stand for.

Yes, NEMO is great.

So is Scheepvaartmuseum (the maritime museum) which has become very interactive ever since its renovation. Games in which you can play a Golden Age trade ship and try to make money transporting the right goods, movies you can feature in yourself rowing a boat, but educational and serious stuff too all about whale hunting and slave trade, and about modern ports and ships. And that's just from the one out of 4 wings I had time for, spending hours there with two 11 year old twin girls.

Children also tend to love beaches, so you could go to Blijburg city beach (with swimming and lifeguards, and a beach cafe). http://blijburg.nl/ Or to other beaches by the North Sea, for example 30 minutes by train to Zandvoort.

Here you will find many more ideas, indoors and outdoors: iamsterdam.com/en-GB/…families-and-children

P.S. It's already mentioned on the website I linked to but I just wanted to add that my nephew, and a friend's kids all LOVED Tropenmuseum. They also have special booklets for kids, I'm not sure if they make them in English... with short quizzes, items they need to find in the museum, and some recipes of international delicacies. There is also a workshop for kids, the type of workshop depends on the display they have at that moment. For example steeldrum music workshop or dance workshop. iamsterdam.com/en-GB/…20Junior

... and the correct pronunciation of "Leiden" is as in the English "laid on".
