Is there a general good area to choose for evening family dining - we are staying at the ramada appollo but I think this is only 10 mins by tram from the centre . Thanks

There are restaurants near your hotel too, and all over the city. There is an even higher concentration in the centre, but the west also has plenty.

It's probably easier if you tell us what kind of food and atmosphere (and price) you're looking for, and whether you want to eat there after seeing attractions in the centre, or after freshening up in the hotel.

This website might help you do your own searches for restaurants: http://www.iens.nl/restaurant/amsterdam

For example this shows you restaurants in the western district which is where your hotel is: http://www.iens.nl/restaurant/amsterdam/west > click 'Kaart' on the top right to see the map.

Possibly take the tram to the Rozengracht and then you have access to the Jordaan and the many restaurants there. Moeders is a family restaurant serving Dutch food on the Rozengracht
