Local Beer and Brew Pubs

My partner and I are visiting Amsterdam this weekend (arriving Friday evening / departing Sunday evening). Whenever we visit cities on the continent we like to try the local beer. Could someone recommend locals beers that we may not have seen before in the UK, it would also be useful to get recommendations of where in the centre would be best to sample the beer.

Also, are there any brew pubs where the beer is brewed on site?

Though I'm sure the Heineken and Amstel are fine, I would like to try something different.

Brouwerij 't IJ at the edge of the center brew their own beers in more amd more flavours, and have a nice cafe attached under a real windmill, and they give tours in English, check website for details on the beers, tours, opening hours (only until 8pm) and how to get there. It's also a nice walk if you go via Entrepotdok (old warehouses turned into homes). www.brouwerijhetij.nl

Their beers are also sold in more and more bars all over Amsterdam. Names like Natte (my favorite so far), Zatte, Plzen, I.P.A., Columbus... Or just ask the bartender or waiter if they have any beers by Brouwerij 't IJ.

De Prael in the center also brew beers, I haven't been there myself. Their site is in Dutch only so I am not sure if they offer tours in English.

You may also enjoy beer bars that don't particularly brew their own but offer lots of flavors from various countries, for example Gollem, De Biertuin, De Ruyschkamer.

Enjoy!

Ah beer , my favourite subject. De Prael is great. Nice beer, cool surroundings and the food is good. not expensive either.

t'Ij is also good but closes at 2000. Better to go in the Summer when you can sit outside. Arendsnest has many Dutch beers. The ones from Texel are pretty good. The owners of this also have the Beer Temple which specialises in American craft beers. Don't be put of by the American thing. These beers are fantastic and they have 30 on tap along with hundreds more in bottles.

Lists lots of great places. the website looks like it was made by a blind child but still has good info althogh some of it might be a little out of date. With the linited time you have I would say De Prael, In de Wildeman and the Gollum off the Spui and perhaps the Bier Fabriek would be about all you can manage.

Some good advice from RonaldoC.

Arendsnest sell only dutch beer, stuff you would be lucky to find anywhere else. Bier Fabriek brews its own, get there early though as night time is pretty busy. think it opens at 4pm.

Pretty much any bar in Amsterdam will serve some Belgian specialty beers like Westmalle, Duvel, etc . So you can always order those when you want to avoid the standard dutch pilsners which are ok but nothing special.

Try the IPA at 't IJ although they have a lot of good beers. Bierfabriek is also very nice, but I only like their tap pilsner (unfiltered). The chicken there is excellent, but only served after a certain time (5PM I think)

Wahoooo beer topics! De Prael, Brouwerij 't IJ, de Wildeman, d'Arendsnest are must stops for us when in the city. But as Grolland pointed out, there are soooo many bars to get great beer. They differ in location, cost and atmosphere. Not too many places that you will go wrong. Yes you may pay 'too much' here, have bad service there. But hell, you're in Amsterdam! Enjoy and drink some for me! Will be there in 3 1/2 months!

Just north of Amsterdam is Beemster, if you can find a Beemster Tripel in a bar then you are on to some good local stuff. And Texel beers can be found, not surprisingly, at the Haven van Texel on Sint Olofssteeg.
