Well, given that you'll lose time traveling between each, I think option 3 is the best. Amsterdam merits at least 3 days in my opinion. Berlin is worthy of 5 days, if not more, but not at the expense of Amsterdam. Knowing your interests will likely yield better, more informative answers.Edited: 16 February 2014, 02:10
I spend 13-14 days each visit pretty much and that is strictly in Amsterdam. That's after 20 plus trips.
8 days? Mine would all be spent in Amsterdam.
For sure I would never opt to leave after only two days.
At least 3 for you.
5 days Berlin, 3 days Amsterdam.
I especially love the eastern parts of Berlin: Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg (not former East Berlin but still a cool area now), Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte... lots of street art, cool cafes, cheap all-you-can-eat brunch buffet places, funky vintage and t-shirt and gift shops, flea markets, monuments out in the open air, communist architecture... But do not expect to see an overal beautiful and pretty city. It is a wild mix of old and hyper modern, ugly and beautiful, old-fashioned German beer gardens and funky hipster places.
Public transport is efficient but if the weather is okay, it's also a perfect city to bike around in, you'll see more that way.
Amsterdam is much smaller but 2 days is very little (especially if that includes time you need for arriving / departing)... there is so much to see and do here as well.
Dresden is a wonderful city, with a lot to see and to do. Imagine all the famous sites and the landscape close by. But it would be a pity just to go there only for a day trip, unless you are just interested into a short and general overview.
But it wouldn´t meet the reputation of this city.
So lovely all the attention. Thanks for sttoping and share your opinions.
Well, I was thinking about Dresden because Berlin might be so opened, multicultural and cosmopolitan that I though about visiting a city in Germany to feel a litle bit of other german visions and behaviour. Both are genuine, of course. That was the reason.
But I think I would loose a lot just visiting AMS for 2 complete days. Museums might be awesome and having a extra day, I would have little time to stop and check people coming and going. And I expect 5 full days in Berlin.
I'm used not to travel ONLY to capitals, but the whole country. Unfortunatelly this time I have to pick the "highlight" ones and walk as much as I can through them.
Cheers from Rio.
PS: Cecile I'm reading your tips right now.
If I said I wanted to visit Rio and I asked you if 2 days was enough, what would you say? 3 is enough? If it was my first visit and I was travelling a long distance, I would want to take the time to absorb the local flavor and be able to remember everything. I think you are pushing your body and mind to rush your visit. The more you cram, the less you will do or remember. 8 days is still too short in my opinion. Pick a city and spend your time there, with a day trip or two. You will miss most of the good stuff rushing. And be exhausted too.
