Schengen visa validity

My traveling companion has a Schengen visa valid from June 29 to August 9 but it states duration of stay for 27 days. We arrive in Amsterdam on June 29 & depart July 26. Does the duration start from the day of arrival? If so, our departure date of July 26 makes the stay 28 days - will this be a problem when we leave Amsterdam? Should we raise this issue upon our arrival in Amsterdam to the immigration authorities? As our air tickets are fixed (no changes are allowed) - leaving earlier is not really an option. Any advice is appreciated!

<Does the duration start from the day of arrival?>

Yes.

<If so, our departure date of July 26 makes the stay 28 days - will this be a problem when we leave Amsterdam?>

In principle, it might be. Did your friend not have to give details of your travel arrangements when applying for the visa (show plane tickets ?). The Dutch Consulate would issue a visa which matched the travel plans.

<Should we raise this issue upon our arrival in Amsterdam to the immigration authorities?>

Take with you (copies of) all the documents your friend had to submit when applying for the visa. (S)he may have to show them to the immigration officer when you arrive. It might be wise to point out the problem with the date.

Scroll down to "Check the information indicated on your visa sticker". Read it carefully.

If there is time before you leave home, your friend could ask the Consulate which issued his/her visa. Its contact details will be on its website.

It looks to me like someone simply mis-counted...

I don't think there will be a problem being let onto the flight (the gate staff checking the passports aren't likely to count the days - if indeed they have the information about the return flight in front of them). I don't think there will be a problem being let into the country. If anything, there could be a problem on leaving the country, IF they notice.

You could either make enquiries after you arrive, as others have suggested... or, if the visa is a multiple-entry one, take a day trip to the UK! If you leave Schengen and come back then any days spent outside Schengen don't count... but you would need a multiple entry visa for this to work.

Another possibility (depending on what time your return flight leaves) would be to spend the last night at one of the airside hotels at Schiphol - they are both deemed to be outside the country.
