Travel from Amsterdam to Paris via Rotterdam

We are planning to travel from Amsterdam to Paris on 6 September. However the Schipol Station will be undergoing maintenance on this day and will have to get to Rotterdam from Amsterdam.

Please advise how long this trip between Rotterdam and Amsterdam will take take, what mode of transport is most recommended and how much will this cost for 2 people with luggage?

Many thanks.

Are you sure? I just checked www.nsinternational.nl and it shows direct train from Amsterdam CS to Paris on that date.

You can check out domestic routes on www.ns.nl

They appear to be travelling from Schipol rather than Amsterdam CS.

The international site is showing a normal schedule from Amsterdam Central to Paris (with some very good prices at the moment I might add) however the domestic website is showing track works between Amsterdam Central and Schiphol for that weekend with the comment:

"op deze datum zijn voor dit traject werkzaamheden gepland, deze zijn in dit reisadvies niet of nog niet volledig verwerkt. plan uw reis vanaf 10 dagen van tevoren opnieuw voor een aangepast reisadvies"

For this date and route there are works planned, these are not or not yet fully incorporated in the schedule. plan your trip from 10 days before for an adjusted travel advice.

So there's something planned but what the exact consequences will be seem to be not yet fully clear. That's how I interpret what i am reading.

To the OP - are you starting your journey from Amsterdam Schipol Airport, or Amsterdam Centraal?

It looks like there are works that weekend, so the trains are starting out from Amsterdam Centraal but are not able to call at Schipol, which would explain why you appear to need a connection to get to Rotterdam.

Incidentally there is no extra charge for luggage, but you must be able to handle it on and off the train yourself.

No need to worry , just book your ticket to Paris. The Thalys will likely go from Amsterdam to Paris via Utrecht that day if there are works on the Schiphol line.

So there are regular Intercity trains to Rotterdam to connect to the Thalys. Seems they both arrive and leave from the same platform. Inconvenient for you I guess but nothing to worry about.

Just make sure that you leave enough time between your flight arriving and booking the train.

And indeed, on that weekend Thalys is being re-routed in the direction of Utrecht (over Woerden maybe?) to Rotterdam where it continues its normal way after missing Schiphol.

So if you are leaving from Amsterdam Central then you have no issue, just a normal direct train albeit on a slightly different route to Rotterdam. If you are leaving from Schiphol then you will indeed have to first take train from Schiphol to Rotterdam. In addition to the caution mentioned above regarding enough time after your scheduled flight arrival also make sure to choose a train that is the combination Intercitydirect & Thalys with one 22 minute stopover in Rotterdam and not the combination that is Intercitydirect & IC & Thalys with two stopovers.
