Breakfast in Leiden

We'll be in Leiden for a few days next month. The breakfast at our Hotel seems overpriced (€13pp), and poorly reviewed, so we haven't booked it.

Can I have recommendations for a good breakfast in central Leiden?

Thanks

Your cheapest option is Hema, a department store in Haarlemmerstraat 130. If you arrive before 10am, a simple breakfast will set you back only €1. This includes coffee, croissant with jam and a baguette with omelet. For €0,50 extra you can get a fresh OJ, for €0,25 two strips of bacon.

At the upper level of V&D department store (Aalmarkt 22) you will find the La Place Restaurant, where you can get a decent breakfast for only €2,95. This includes coffee/tea, fresh OJ and five breakfast items of your choice (such as yoghurt, omelet, fruit, croissant, chocolate pastry). Only available Tue-Sat before 11am.

If you rather enjoy breakfast in a proper café/bistro:

- Anne & Max. Address: Gangetje 2, at the eastern end of Breestraat http://annemax.nl/menu/ontbijt/ Breakfast from 8:00am-noon

- City Hall. Address: Stadhuisplein 3. Open from 9am Mon-Sat, 10am Sun. It's been a long time since I've had breakfast there myself though. http://www.restaurantcityhall.nl/

- Bagels & Beans. Address: Maarsmansteeg 8, next to V&D. They have another branch in Leiden, but I prefer this one. bagelsbeans.nl/winkel_maarsmansteeg_leiden.s…

- Petterson. Address: Prinsessekade 5L. Excellent location, and I especially recommend it when the weather is sunny. But breakfast isn't much cheaper than at your hotel. http://www.petterssonleiden.nl/

A good breakfast-on-the-go can be bought at the Frysian bakery Us Bertus, located close to the Rapenburg canal at Groenhazengracht 10. Popular among locals and students of the nearby university.

Another option close to the railway station: De Bruine Boon. From their outdoor terrace you have a nice view of windmill Molen De Valk. Good for people watching as well, if you don't mind all those buses that pass by every minute or so. http://www.debruineboon.nl/menukaart/

FYI: breakfast is called ontbijt in Dutch.
