highlights of Flemish Region

Hi, we're planning on a trip to France and Belgium this summer, in car/ campervan. Our plan is the ferry to Cherbourg and then drive our way to Bruges.. Can anyone suggest some highlights of the Flemish Region please? Attractions, towns, beaches, restaurants etc? Replies much appreciated, Thanks a mill!

I think the only place in Flanders that you really ought to visit on the way to Brugge is Ieper/Ypres and surrounding area if you are interested in WWI trenches. Near Brugge there are windmills at Damme and beyond it, you could visit Ghent and the cute little town of Lier near Antwerp (as well as Antwerp itself, of course).

I don't think you will not find the coast very scenic after Ireland. But if you are keen on Michelin-starred restaurants, there are plenty of those, see flandersnews.be/cm/…1.212125

Otherwise I would suggest you see what appeals on http://www.visitflanders.co.uk/

Belgian beaches and resorts, Knokke and De Panne are nice.

If you are at De Panne then Veurne is just inland a few miles. Nice old architecture, especially round the main square, which has cafes.

You should definitely take some time out to visit Cassel in French Flanders, a lovely old village on top of one of the few hills of the region (allegedly where the Grand Old Duke of York marched his men up and down!):

The Estaminet Kasteelhof alone is worth stopping there for - a great place for lunch with a wonderful atmosphere, traditional Flemish games, cooking and beer - lots of beer!

Bergues is also a nice place to stop - a very pretty old fortified market town.

Over the border in Belgium Veurne, Diksmuide and Poperinge are all worth a look - as regards the latter I can recommend the Palace Hotel for a night or two's stay and the Gasthof Kring, the Paix and the Poussecafe as regards eating and drinking.

Useful where to eat site:

There is also a very good guide to the restaurants of the Nord-Pas de Calais area by Patricia Fenn.

I hope this helps!
