If you are interested in WWI, surely the place you want to be in Belgium for the 2-3 days you want to spend in this country is not Brugge but Ieper. See toerisme-ieper.be/en/…great-war-centenary.htm
Wow, er, personally, you need a lot time of Belgium to do this sort of thing (WWII).
Ieper (Ypres) for Hill 62 and other historical monuments.
Diksmuide - for the watch tower and museum
But seriously, there is a lot of history all around the country is worth checking out.
Brugge (Bruges) - as a tourist, a day is enough and if the weather is good, take a boat ride along the canals. A trip up the Belfy is a must, and the Belgium fries are so much better than the French fries. :)
Somme - as well as checking out the monuments, also check out Le Grand Dome, a huge hole in the ground which the British armed forces blew up the Nazi Germans in WWII with dyamite. :) Its near Thepival.
And THIEPVAL is of course in France, not Belgium. For information about visiting the Somme you would need to ask in the relevant forum e.g. tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g196657-i3130-Amie…
You don't say how you would be travelling, but if hiring a car in Lille, bear in mind that you would pay extra to drop it off in Belgium rather than returning it in France. However, it would in any case be convenient to return to Lille, as you can catch the Eurostar to London from there (the one coming from Brussels).
I would suggest using organised tours (most depart from UK) for inspiration on itinerary and timing, e.g. spiritofhistory.co.uk/spiritofhistory/daytri… - http://www.battlefields.co.uk - adapting as necessary for your particular interests.
If not travelling by car, there are also organised day trips to the Somme from Paris: viator.com/tours/…d479-5045T80 and to the Ypres Salient from Brugge (http://www.visitbruges.org/visit-tours-bruges/daytours_bruges.asp -http://brugge-city-tours.be) or, obviously, Ieper: http://www.ypres-fbt.com - or it is possible to arrange a private tour from Ieper covering the Somme as well: http://www.camalou.com/BATTLEFIELDTOURS/
Wow! That's good information. I am also interested in American Cemeteries, which I researched on the American Battle Monuments Commission. There appear to be several east and northeast of Paris, as well as at the Somme. We're totally flexible as to days, so I'll continue to do research and welcome anyone's additional comments.
you're correct. I need to post the Somme and France questions on another forum.
There will be important commemorations in Mons both at the beginning and end of August 2014.
OP is interested in US-related events! The Battle of Mons was in August 1914 and didn't involve the U.S., who didn't enter WWI until April 1917.Edited: 01 September 2013, 18:40
Yes, I know that qaminari but the OP didn't specify Us-related events (even though from Michigan):-
<<We are interested in a WWI commemoration trip in 2014>>
He added: I am also interested in American Cemeteries
(Note the word "also")
