Wineries near Ghent

We are spending a week in Ghent and would like to take a day trip to somewhere in France. We've been planning on a day trip to Lille, but since we are into wine, we've starting thinking that we would like to visit a French winery if possible (don't worry...we've already planned plenty of beer-centered excursions). Ghent isn't very close to any of the wine regions, but in the US it's not unusual for a winery to pop up near, but not exactly within, one of the major regions. Does anyone know of a winery that would be accessible from Ghent? We won't have a car and would like to get as close as possible via train.

You will be a LONG way from any of the significant French wine producing areas especially as you won't have your own transport.

There are the odd small wine producers dotted around all over the place even in Belgium, but the nearest and most accessible wine producing area to Gent is the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg where there are a surprisingly large number of producers, some of whom sometimes welcome visitors.

Luxembourg City is around 3 hours by train from Gent, changing in Brussels, and public transport, mainly by bus, is well organised within the Grand Duchy so a trip to a winery there might prove feasible, although it would be a long day out.

If that idea might meet your criteria, then I suggest that you post on the Luxembourg forum asking if anyone knows of wineries there that might welcome you.

Not sure why becasse thinks Luxembourg is the nearest are for wine... Try having a look at several wineries in the Limburg area of Belgium to the East of Brussels.

There is a recent TV fiction/drama series about wine makers on Flemish TV and it is possible to visit the vineyard (website in Flemish but you should have no problem contacting them in English) zuidflank.be

The 18 professional winegrowers in Belgium can be found listed on veldverkenners.be (again in Flemish...)

There is a champagne style wine that isn't too bad..ruffus.be

Maybe it would be easier to visit Mig's World Wine shop in Brussels where there are several Belgian wines on offer

My two cents: 1) just to reassure you: these Belgian wineries are not cheap at all, their wines are excellent. They will be focused on white wine and maybe a little red. 2) one of the closest french areas is the champagne area, Reims (France) is capital of that region. I guess driving distance is reasonable for an American(say 4 hours). Nice area to visit.
