Train Travel from Brussels to Paris

Hello - I wonder if I could ask for some advice. My family and I will be spending a few days in Brussels and then travelling to Paris for a few days. We do not particularly wish to get there on the very fast train (in 1 or 2 hours), and would prefer to enjoy the countryside travelling on the slower more conventional trains. What would be a good website to look at timetables etc. I don't think Eurorail passes and that sort of thing would be suitable in this instance. Thank you in advance for taking the trouble to respond.

A "conventional slower trains" option does not exist on this route. There several connections with multiple changes in Kortrijk, Lille and possibly other places, but the cheap slow transport on the route is mainly by bus (Eurolines - about 4-5 hours). The bus follows the main motorways and is certainly not a "scenic" option.

Thalys is the ONLY train available between Brussels and Paris, apart from the equally high-speed TGV to Paris-CDG airport, which calls at Lille. There are no "conventional" trains on either route.

You can take normal, non-high-speed Belgian trains as far as Lille-FLANDRES (it is important to specify this station, as entering Lille-Europe will give you TGV and Eurostar), which take 1h59 (starting at Bruxelles-Central) and require changing at Gent St. Pieters, Mouscron or Tournai. However, from Lille I know of no non-high-speed trains to Paris, so you would still have to take the TGV from there.

For timetables alone, the easiest site to use is http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en but when you are ready to purchase, and for checking prices, use http://www.b-europe.com/Travel

Thank you so much to both of you for taking the time to respond. Yes, I guess this is what I am being told - no slow 'scenic' train rides, so I guess it is the fast trains for us.

Hello again. I went to the "reiseauskunft.bahn' website and for type of ticket was confronted with 'Bahn 25, 2nd class (Incl Railplus)" etc. and do not understand what the different kinds of tickets are. There will be 4 of us and we would like to have a compartment to ourselves rather than sit in the long coach. Which type of ticket would we need for that and what kind of seating does the 2nd class ticket offer? Thank you again in advance.

The German railroad site is a good site to check rail schedules throughout Europe.

www.bahn.de/i/view/overseas/en/index.shtml

However, other than the Hi-speed Thalys to Paris Gare du Nord or the TGV if you're going to CDG airport, local trains are not really a viable option for this routing. Due to the way the French rail system is structured, you're probably talking a very long trip with numerous changes.

As I said (here with emphasis), "For TIMETABLES alone, the easiest site to use is http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en but when you are ready to PURCHASE, and for checking prices, use http://www.b-europe.com/Travel"

You cannot buy Brussels-Paris Thalys tickets from DB, and the terms mentioned are irrelevant to you. Buy from the b-europe site (or www.thalys.com), which may permit you to select seats next to each other but does not offer any 4-person compartments you can have to yourself!

Here are photos of seating: http://www.seat61.com/thalys.htm
