I would like to take my husband on a surprise visit to Belgium during Oktoberfest 2012, first week of October is his birthday. Any recommendations?
Do you mean from Munich? Given that the Belgian Oktoberfest/feest is (was already, for 2012) held in May...
And while there is also one in Brussels (Place Jourdan, Etterbeek), it takes place on 12-17 October 2012 so after the first week of October.
And recommendations for what, exactly? You say "in Belgium" but you placed this in the Brussels forum. If you want to visit a brewery here, as far as I know the only possibility - apart from the brewing museum in the Grand' Place - is Cantillon (Gueuze), www.cantillon.be - see also tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g188644-d2… although you don't need a guided tour just to sample a wide range of Belgian beers in Brussels, there are many beer cafés where you can do just that.
In nearby Leuven - 20-30 mins from Brussels by train - you can visit the Domus brewery, www.domusleuven.be - in Brugge, De Halve Maan, in Ghent, the Gruut city brewery...
If you want to visit the abbeys it's more difficult for individuals, especially if not travelling by car, but there are plenty of previous questions (with answers) on this subject if you do a search in the Belgium forum.Edited: 23 July 2012, 20:12
