Brussels to Maastricht - hotel near station?

Hello - we are flying into Brussels airport and then taking train to Maastricht, however we will stay in Brussels for 1 night on route as our flight arrival is around 6 pm. and we would like to eat in Brussels. I think the train to Maastricht leaves from Gare du Midi ( to Liege). We are looking at hotels near Gare du Midi but would like to know is that station on the train from the airport too? Or should we be looking at hotels near Central Station? We will only have hand luggage and so just want to walk to hotel if it is safe to do so. Which of the 2 stations is the safest area? Some bad stories here on the station surrounds. We would like to have a good food dinner in Brussels that evening - any suggestions? - we can, of course take taxi to the restaurant. Many thanks for any ideas or comments from those of you in the know or local.

< I think the train to Maastricht leaves from Gare du Midi ( to Liege) >

Trains to Liège / Maastricht stop at all the 3 main Brussels stations - Midi, Central and Nord. You can get on at any of them.

< We are looking at hotels near Gare du Midi >

Don't.

< is that station on the train from the airport too? >

Yes. Trains to and from the airport also stop at all 3 stations - Midi, Central and Nord. However, the area around Midi station is unattractive and traffic-ridden and has nothing of interest to visitors.

< Or should we be looking at hotels near Central Station? >

Yes.

< We will only have hand luggage and so just want to walk to hotel if it is safe to do so. >

Of course it is safe to walk to the hotel from the station.

< Which of the 2 stations is the safest area?>

The question should be: Which of the 2 stations is the *most pleasant* area ? The answer to that question is: Central Station.

WOW -- thanks a million for your quick reply -- we will take your advice and book hotel nearer to Central Station --- have you heard of Bedford Hotel & Congress Centre, Rue du Midi 135? - we could get a great deal there but I wonder if it is near the Central or the Midi Station (because of its name). Reviewers on this site say that is near the main station??? Otherwise we will have to go for the more expensive 'Meridian' or Radisson or Best Western. Thanks again - your information has been invaluable for both our outward and our homeward trip. Cheers!

I have heard of it but don't know anything about it. It is here http://goo.gl/maps/m5kva - indicated by the "A". Much nearer to Central Station and the Grand-Place than it is to Gare du Midi, as you can see.

http://goo.gl/maps/kUREI - Hotel Bedford is the building on the left with the 3 arches.

I think rue du Midi is called that because it *leads towards* the Midi area.

If you "walk" in a straight line along rue du Midi on Google Street View in this direction http://goo.gl/maps/F7lf3 (street is given its Dutch name "Zuidstraat" on Street View), you will see the location of the hotel in relation to the Grand-Place area.

When you get to this church http://goo.gl/maps/2zQ9d the Grand-Place is just up the street to the right http://goo.gl/maps/UnXoL

Central Station is 6 or 7 minutes walk (uphill !) behind the Grand-Place.
