Need advice on day trip

Hello,

as we are doing our planning for our visit to brussels in 2014, we would like advice comments re. a day trip from Brussels.

One option is for us to take a train on our own to Bruges; the other option is to take an all-day tour to Ghent and Bruges. Any thoughts/comments as to which option we should plan for?

thanks in advance for your comments/suggestions!

It's entirely a matter of personal preference. It is easy enough to visit both Ghent and Brugge on your own by train from Brussels, but if you want to visit both in one day, the organised tour will save on transport time, as going to Ghent by train requires taking a tram between the station and the centre (at Brugge the station is only 15-20 mins walk from the centre). And of course you would have information from a guide, if you want that.

In terms of cost, assuming no children, youths or seniors, and no application of periodic promo tickets, Brussels-Brugge by train costs €13.80 single, €27.60 return on weekdays, €14.80 return on Sat/Sun. These are through-tickets, if you want to interrupt your journey by stopping off in Ghent you would need a VIA ticket in the direction in which you would be stopping off, e.g. Brussels-Brugge VIA Ghent (€15) and a single ticket for the direct trip Brussels-Brugge or Brugge-Brussels (€13.80), total €28.80. At weekends it is possible to use 2 weekend return tickets back-to-back, i.e. Brussels-Ghent-Brussels (€9.60) plus Ghent-Brugge-Ghent (€7.40) total €17.

Note: there are no buses from Brussels to either Ghent or Brugge. De Lijn buses from below Gare du Nord serve the area of Flanders close to Brussels.
