Bike from Brussels to Antwerp or Ghent for the day?

We would love to be able to self power from Brussels to the other scenic destinations rather than ride the train. Or, plan B, cycle one way, return by train with bikes. Fitness aside, it is reasonable to ride to either Antwerp or Ghent for the day? Or is there too much traffic, not enough bike accessible lanes? Any advice on a bike shop to hire a bike?

Personally I think it would be better to go by train and rent a bike when you get there, if you want it for visiting the cities concerned. You can do so at both Gent St. Pieters station and Antwerpen-Centraal (or Berchem if you want to visit the Zurenborg area): www.blue-bike.be/en/find-blue-bike-location

To take a bike on a train, you will pay €5 for a single trip on top of your own ticket (or €8 for a day ticket): belgianrail.be/en/…bike-on-the-train.aspx

Otherwise, for bike routes from Brussels to Ghent see e.g. http://www.gamber.net/cyclebel/br-gent.htm or routeyou.com/en/route/view/235791/cycling-ro… (click on download) and from Brussels to Antwerp, provelo.org/en/…brussels-antwerp
