Last minute Ghent day trip - help

We are going to make a last minute trip to Ghent one day this week! Two kids 5 and 7. Can someone map out a fun day for us from like 10am-6pm? Including the Belfry and Gravensteen? Good food or pick up picnic lunch? Thanks in advance!!

No, but I can give you some practical information:

1) TRAIN TICKETS: you only need 2 train tickets because children under 12 travel free on Belgian Railways (belgianrail.be/en/…children.aspx): and if you are going on a weekday, the price will be €18.40 return per adult and if on Sat/Sun, €10.20 (weekend ticket), assuming that neither of you is under 26 (or over 65, you never know...).

2) TRAIN INFORMATION: not knowing which station you want to leave from in Brussels (trains to Ghent depart from Bruxelles-Nord, Bruxelles-Central and Bruxelles-Midi, in that order, with final destination Oostende/ Knokke / Blankenberge, and from some other stations when final destination is De Panne), if you want to know the train timetable you'll have to look it up yourself. I would suggest using http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en as (being limited to TRAINS) it's simpler to use than www.belgianrail.be, which covers local transport and therefore lists bus stops as well as stations. Although trains are frequent enough for you to just turn up at whichever Brussels station you would be departing from and take the next one. The station you will be getting off at is Gent St. Pieters - the only station in Ghent that trains from Brussels can stop at.

3) TRAM TO CITY CENTRE: from outside that station, tram #1 direction Evergem/Wondelgem departs from stand 2 (come out of the front of the station, aim for the little park surrounded by bikes and turn left: see plan of tram stops on http://gent.delijn.be/files/attachments/.3154/A3_GSP_maart2016.pdf) and takes about 10 mins to Korenmarkt (stop near St. Niklaas church). Or you might like to stay on till the next stop, which is Gravensteen, for the castle: that way you would be walking BACK to Graslei for boat ride, if you want this, and the belfry and can return to the station from the Korenmarkt stop.

Only children younger than 6 (so the 5-yr old) travel free on the tram, and individual tickets cost €3 each, so rather than pay €18 for 6 trips (3 into the city and 3 back), you can buy a 10-trip Lijnkaart for €15, from ticket machines at the tram stop or the De Lijn ticket office at the end of the stand 2 "platform" (it's the little brown house symbol on the map). Or if you don't mind paying €18 and you think you might be making more than 2 tram/bus trips each, you can buy 3 x 1-day cards for €6.

If using a Lijnkaart, you need to validate the card 3 times per trip, to cover 3 of you, in the yellow machine on board the tram, see photo on https://www.delijn.be/en/vervoerbewijzen/

4) FOOD: If by any chance you find sandwiches or something that take your fancy, there are some low walls behind St. Niklaas church in Veerleplein, near the Korenmarkt tram stops, that you could probably sit on to eat them (just about within sight of McDonalds, incidentally..). Otherwise, not knowing what sort of things you might want to eat, I don't know whether you would like this café/bakery in Jan Breydelstraat near the Design Museum (and only about 2 mins walk from Graslei where the tour boats go from): https:/…resto-brooderie-jaffa - otherwise, see https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g188…
