Ghent in late October with a trip to Venice/Rome

We are going to Ghent in late October for work and would like to visit Rome and/or Venice for 4/5 days before or after our stay in Belgium.

Any ideas on the best way to do this to minimize our travel times in Europe and flying from Chicago?

The closest airport to Ghent is Brussels (BRU) which in addition to United flights to/from Chicago O'Hare has year-round flights to both Rome-Fiumicino (Alitalia, Brussels Airlines; Ryanair from Feb, Vueling from April) and Venice (Brussels Airlines; Vueling from April); and Ryanair will also start flights from BRU next month to Treviso for Venice. Though when/whether the low-cost airlines might commit to a schedule for October, I don't know.

It's up to you to research timetables and prices, to work out your best option. You may find it useful to use : www.brusselsairport.be/en/passngr/schedules/ (or skyscanner).

BRU has direct trains twice an hour to Gent St. Pieters, which take 53/59 mins (51 mins past the hour) or 1h32 (9 mins past the hour) ; at other times it is necessary to change in Brussels.

4/5 days for Venice and Rome are bit optimistic although it's doable. Both cities require certain amount of attentions.
