Day Trip From Ghent To Sleidinge

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to get to Sleidinge from Ghent without a car. My husband would like to visit the farm house where his father grew up and walk around the town for half a day. Is there a bus or train or could we rent bikes depending on distance? Thanks for any advice you can give.

There are trains from Gent St. Pieters (also Gentbrugge and Gent Dampoort) to Sleidinge - final destination Eeklo - which take 27 minutes from St. Pieters station and cost €3.10 single, €6.20 return on weekdays, €4.20 return on Sat/Sun: see www.belgianrail.be

In addition, De Lijn bus 58 Gent-Eeklo-Brugge stops at Sleidinge. It has 11 stops in Sleidinge so you would need to work out which one you need. They take 50 minutes from Gent St. Pieters to Sleidinge Dorp (= village), see …delijn.be/dienstregelingen/Kalender2011/Ovl… or you can download the timetable from …delijn.be/dienstregelingen/Dienstregelingen…

An individual (one-way) bus ticket would cost €3 from the bus driver, €2 from De Lijn office or ticket machine; but there are various other formulas, and as the same company runs buses and trams in Ghent, you can use a multi-trip Lijnkaart (€10) or day pass (€5 from De Lijn office or ticket machines) both in the city and for the bus to/in/from Sleidinge, and in fact anywhere else in Flanders.

Bike rental would be by the day, not by distance! See http://www.visitgent.be/en/bicycle-rental

I think the OP may mean: would it be feasible to hire bicycles and cycle from Ghent to Sleidinge, or is it perhaps too far ... :-)

Sleidinge like the rest of Belgium is on Google Street View http://tinyurl.com/nlsw93e

Ah yes, see what you mean!

Either way, a practical compromise if a bike would be useful if needing to cover a certain amount of ground in Sleidinge would be to either rent in Ghent and take it on the train, which costs €5 one way or €8 for a day-ticket covering return journey (http://www.belgianrail.be/en/travel-tickets/tickets/bike-trip.aspx - http://www.belgianrail.be/en/travel-tickets/tickets/bike-day.aspx); or, possibly, rent in Sleidinge (or Evergem).

These bike shops don't seem to mention rentals but you could always e-mail them: http://www.rijwielengenico.be/? - http://www.fietsendebleecker.be

Unlike some other stations, you can't hire a bike from Sleidinge station, but it does have free bike parking: belgianrail.be/en/…sleidinge.aspx

Thank you so much for your informative response. And yes you were correct that I was wondering if it was to far to ride on bikes to and from not cost related to distance. Thank you again for your assistance with trains and bus stops it has been greatly appreciated!

Does he know where the farmhouse is, or would you like any help in finding it ?

No he does not know where it is located but he is trying to make contact with a possible relative to get a location. It is the Pede farm.

Is Pede a family name? There are a Hanny, Danny, Rony, Caroline and Bart Pede living or working in Sleidinge (and an Anne who is a notaris in nearby Bottelare/Merelbeke), though none in connection with any farm, that I can see.

You could use the info@ email address of this local history site for further information: http://www.sleinsarchief.be/site/

The article by Camiel Peeters in http://www.vlacan.be/nieuwsbrief/Binder52.pdf mentions (in the last paragraph) a farm - but in Aylmer, Canada! - of one Joris Pede, born in Sleidinge and Jacqueline Couckuyt from Wevelgem! Joris Pede's father was apparently a clog-maker in Sleidinge, and if you don't already know it (as I imagine you must), you can read about that in http://www.vlacan.be/nieuwsbrief/Binder53.pdf

The clog maker (klompenmakerij) Camiel Pede is also mentioned in the sleinsarchief site. But no farm.

Joris was my husbands uncle, his fathers brother. Both of his siblings are deceased as is my husbands father. We are trying to make communication with his aunts living children presently. We still have a few months prior to our arrival to Ghent so we are hopeful. My husband actually has a pair of the wooden shoes that were made in a workshop on his fathers farm from back in the mid 40's. Thank you again for your help and interest.
