It would help to know where from, I'll assume it's Chester, as a possible starting point in Cheshire.

For the most economical way, either look at British National Express bus services (Eurolines on the continent), or possibly Flixbus; or if flights are on convenient days and at convenient times, Ryanair fly from Manchester to Charleroi (CRL), from which Flibco run a shuttle to Brugge, taking about 2 hrs. Booked as early as possible, this costs only €5 (cheaper even than the bus from CRL to Charleroi-Sud station!) and the maximum online price is €17 - which would become €21 if you left this until you got there, when there may also not be places: https://www.flibco.com/en/shuttle-bruges-charleroi

For the "best" way, if you were starting from London I would say Eurostar to Brussels and then local train to Brugge, total travel time 3 1/2 hrs. However, starting from Chester this would take nearly 7 hours with changes in London (allowing 45 minutes for check-in etc. at St. Pancras International) and Bruxelles-Midi. Therefore if I were doing this journey myself, I would probably want to fly (Brussels Airlines) from Manchester to BRUSSELS Airport (BRU), which has its own station, from which direct trains to Brugge take 1h30 (BRU-Brugge, departures at 59 mins past the hour).

either fly from Manchester to Brussels (see Brussels Airlines) and then train Brussels airport to Bruges (see http://www.belgianrail.be/en/ )

or travel from Cheshire to London and take the Eurostar to Brussels Midi/Zuid and then train from there to Bruges (see https://www.b-europe.com/EN/Destinations/Bruges )

Fly there and get the train back.

That what I would do anyway, mainly because it's easier to bring back a few bottles of nice Belgian beer , chocolate, frites sauce etc on Eurostar. ;-)

That's a nice idea, matt. It's something I've done on trips to Europe a couple of times, though not specifically to Bruges.

In this case, I think that the absolute cheapest way to do the journey woudl be coach, but to my mind the best value in terms of cost vs spedd would be to fly with a low costs airline. Remember to include whatever costs there are in getting to and from the airport, as well as any fees for bags, card usage and so forth. The train may be more competitive overall, both cost and speed wise, if you are nearer to a major station than you are to an airport.
