Bruge as a base for travel around Flanders?

We are going to be in Belgium in August for a week and are traveling with our 9 year old children. We will stay in Brussels one night after arriving by train and then planned to travel to Bruge but would also like to visit Ghent and the coast. Would you recommend staying a few nights in each location or staying in Bruge and using it as a base for day trips to other areas?

Thanks for any recommendations!

Bruges is more or less in the middle between Ghent and the coast.(e.g.Ostend)

SUMMER TICKET:

From monday till friday you can get one way traintickets €7.50 any destination in Belgium(except Brussels Airport i think).

Kids less 12 years old: FREE !

More information on "SUMMER TICKET"

Staying in Bruges is a good option !

Enjoy.

Well yes but if you were going from Brugge to Blankenberge, for example - a good place from which to take the Coast Tram - the normal price is only €2.70 (return €5.40) anyway, and for Ghent, €5.90, (return €11.80)! So the "summer ticket" (€7.50 single, €15 return) should only be used for destinations further away. In my experience, the ticket clerks at the station are usually very good at recommending the best bargain for your circumstances anyway.

Incidentally, accompanied children under 12 travel free (on Belgian Railways): b-rail.be/nat/…index.php
