New Year's Day

My family will arrive in Bruges for our first trip on New Years Day. Will anything be open or are museums closed?

Hi

Municipal museums will be closed on the 1st January, see link below:

brugge.be/internet/en/musea/praktische_inlic…

Most of the private museums (Choco-Story, Frite Museum are also closed on he 1st).

The Christmas market stalls will be open. Last year there was an ice rink as part of the market in the Markt and that was open, I presume it will be back this year.

Non tourist shops may well be closed, but tourists shops should be open at least in the afternoon.

There is a Snow & Ice Sculpture festival, which is in front of the station. That is open on the 1st.

No worries about tourist shops, while all shops close early evening in Bruges some tourist shops stay open until 10 PM or even later.

Many bars & restaurants will be closed on the 1st January, many hangovers that day but you'll find enough places open to have a drink and feed yourself.

The belfry and the city hall on the Grote Markt will be open on New Year's Day between 9:30 AM & 5 PM. The Begijnhof (Beguines) will be open until 6:30 PM, don't know if the houses will be open.

The Belgian fries museum should be open on New Year's Day

Tourist shops : about 50% of them will be open in the afternoon.

But they do close around 6pm.

Some tourist shops are now run by people from Pakistan and these will undoubtedly be open later. I pass along some of them every Monday night just before 10 PM.
