Transportation from Bruges to Canterbury England

Hi There: Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get from Bruge to Canterbury. I checked the Eurorail and the price for five of us was $775. I was thinking it might be more cost effective to hire a private driver. Does anyone know of such a service in Bruge?

Is that 5 adults and 1-way, 2nd class? Because while I'm not famililar with USD, it sounds like rather a lot. Eurorail is a ticketing agency, not a train operator, so check with Belgian Railways (http://www.b-europe.com/Travel) or Eurostar itself (www.eurostar.com) - bear in mind that there aren't many Eurostars now that stop at Ashford, so you may have to go into London and come out again. See railway map on southeasternrailway.co.uk/your-journey/…

For chauffeur-driven car, you could try these people http://www.brugsetaxiservice.com/eng.html - but of course they'll have to pay for the ferry or Eurotunnel on top of the normal cost, and I imagine they'll charge you for the trip back as they cannot pick up a fare in Canterbury.

There are also buses to Canterbury from Brussels or Lille, see www.eurolines.com.

Hi Qaminari: Actually it is two adults and three youths, 1 way, second class. I just checked again and it is now $790 CND which is about 590 euros. I believe we do have to make two stops, we go Bruge-Brussells, Brussells-London and London - Canterbury. I will check out the bus schedule, it might be more cost effective. Thanks for the info Qaminari. Lee Anne

If you are asking the taxi company for a quote, consider asking also how much it would cost to be dropped off at the ferry port in Calais. The P&O ferry takes foot passengers (about €35 per person, single - I think this is for all over-16s, see http://www.poferries.eu/), and from Dover it's not far by train or bus to Canterbury. See tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g186311-i1169-k131… and maybe check for something more up-to-date.

It's many years since I did this ferry trip (in the opposite direction), but I don't recall any problem getting from Dover Priory station to the ship - either P&O must have run a shuttle or it wasn't necessary.

Actually Qaminari, that is an excellent idea, as we also want to spend some time in Dover and Calais, so that would give us the opportunity to check out both those locations. I will follow up on that and see what I can find out. Thanks Again. Lee Anne

Hi Again: I emailed the taxi company that was recommended two days ago and have received no response. I think we have decided on Qaminari's suggestion, so will just need a tranfer from Brugge to Calais, but it doesn't seem that there is any direct way there on public transport. Are we going to have to hitchhike? Lee Anne

Depends what you mean by "direct": it's perfectly possible to get there by train, via Lille, which takes just under 3 hrs, e.g.

- Dep. Brugge 07:32, arr. Lille Flandres 08:50

- Dep. Lille Flandres 09:00, arr. Calais Ville 10:26

- or if that's cutting it too fine for you, the next train to Calais is at 10:00, arr 11:26

If you take the 08:32 departure from Brugge, you would also connect in Lille - but after changing in Kortrijk also, where the transfer time would be 7 mins - with the 10:00 to Calais arr. 11:26.

Price is €34.60 per person (over 12, no youth fare), from http://www.b-europe.com/Travel.

The P&O shuttle bus from Calais Ville station to the ferry terminal costs €2 per person - or used to, not sure if this is current price.

As already noted, you can also go to Dover/Canterbury by Eurolines coach: some departures take the ferry from Calais and some the tunnel (from Sangatte, near Calais - the Eurotunnel station is Calais-Fréthun), in both cases arriving at/near Dover.

For the sake of completion, it is also possible to take a train (€2.90)/bus 791 from Brugge to Blankenberge, then the Coast Tram all the way to its terminus in De Panne (using day pass, €5 advance purchase, €7 if purchased on tram), then - but only between the end of June and the beginning of September - bus 2B run by DK'bus Marine (http://www.dkbus.com/) across the border to Dunkerque; and from there another bus to Calais (http://www.ligne-bcd.com/plan_reseau.php). Or, it would be quicker to take the train from Brugge to Oostende (€3.90) and then the same bus - which runs Oostende, De Panne, Dunkerque - to Dunkerque. Outside the period when bus 2B is running, I guess you would have to take a taxi between De Panne and Dunkerque.

Qaminari: Thanks for you response that is perfect, I think we will take the train to Calais from Brugge and once we hit Calais we can wing it, not sure if we will stay overnite there or in Dover but we can decide that later. Thanks again for all your assistance. Lee Anne
