Lille to Lissewege

We are a family of four adults, going to Lille for the day by Eurostar (arriving early monring returning in the evening) and wish to visit Lissewege by bus or train (on a Tuesday). Could you advise how best to do this please?

Eurostar arrives at Lille-Europe station, you have to walk to nearby Lille-Flandres for trains to Brugge (direct trains on weekdays only at 09:08 and 13:08) or Kortrijk (Courtrai in French), where you change for Brugge/ Bruges (sometimes it is also necessary to change in Ghent and also somewhere in France), and from Brugge you can take a train/bus (or cycle!) the 10 km or so to Lissewege.

The train from Lille to Brugge takes between 1h19 (direct) and 2h18 (2-3 changes) and cost is the same in all cases, at €18.40 single, so €36.80 return from Lille. If you wish (makes no difference to cost) you can purchase tickets in advance from http://www.b-europe.com/Travel (Belgian Railways: for connections place your mouse over the train type(s) e.g. IC or IC-IC-IC indicated above departure times), selecting homeprinting option. If you want to pay in sterling and receive physical tickets by post, you would have to use www.raileurope.co.uk, who are ticketing agents for French Railways in English-speaking countries.

From Brugge, trains to Zeebrugge stop at Lissewege (13 mins) and there is also De Lijn bus 47, direction Zeebrugge, which departs from Brugge Station. However, DL bus 47 has only 2 departures a day (Mon-Sat: none on Sundays) which are at 12:15 and 15:50 on weekdays and 13:00 and 16:45 on Saturdays: see …delijn.be/dienstregelingen/Kalender2011/Wvl… or you can download the timetable from here …delijn.be/dienstregelingen/Dienstregelingen… or, entering the date on which you want to make this journey, http://reisinfo.delijn.be/dienstregelingen/ (first entering in the 3rd large box outlined in black, "lijnnummer:" 47 and "gemeente:" Brugge: fill in date and then click on "zoeken" right at the bottom of the page).

As for trains, in Jul/August at least, there are hourly trains from Brugge to Lissewege every day (weekday, Sat and Sun), departing at 08 mins past each hour: see http://www.railtime.be/website/train-schedule

Cost is €2.50 single, €5 return or on Sat/Sun, €3.80 weekend return.

Many thanks for this. Very useful. As we are only on a day trip, it looks as if we would have to spend much of the day travelling. Can you advise on low cost taxi services? Thank you.

There is no such thing as a low-cost cross-border taxi service, and Lissewege is 84 km from Lille! I dread to think what that would cost on the meter, but this (although it's for a trip in the opposite direction) suggests that you might be able to get a private transfer at a flat-rate fee for about €100 one way: city-airport-taxis.com/airporttransfers/rese… - in the direction you want, these people only give price for luxury minivan: airportstaxitransfers.com/transportation/tax…

If you don't want to hire a car in Lille and drive yourselves, I suggest you ask for quotes from local (Lille) companies such as (from google) limousine-center.eu/limousine-service/lille/ or 1cares.com/fr/en/car/rent-a-car-in-Lille.html or https:/…taxi-transfers-Lille-250091.html

I would not myself consider Lissewege as a day-trip destination from London (especially as the time difference is not in your favour, making you arrive on the continent 1 hr later than UK time), but in any case, getting off the Eurostar in Lille and taking slow trains North is not the best way of getting there. You would do better to continue to Brussels on the high-speed train and change there to IC train to Brugge.

For example, according to the current timetable for a weekday (I don't know WHEN you want to do this journey, which might also make a difference), departing London St. Pancras International at 06:50 you arrive at Lille-Europe at 09:30 ; there isn't any departure from Lille with connections to Brugge/Lissewege until 10:25 (from Lille-Flandres, so you have plenty of time to walk there), which would not get you to Lissewege until 13:20 - and this is via (Tournai and) Brussels anyway! Whereas, continuing on the same Eurostar to Bruxelles-Midi, you would arrive there at 10:07 and could change to the 11:05 to Brugge (or the 10:20, 10:26 or 10:58, with a longer wait for your connection in Brugge) and arrive in Lissewege at 12:20. (To reach Lissewege an hour earlier, you would have to be on the 10:05 from Bruxelles-Midi to Brugge, but Eurostar gets in just too late.) Or you could, of course, take the 10:20 train to Brugge, which arrives there at 11:21, and just take a taxi to Lissewege, when you could arrive before noon.

Yes, it's a tall order I know. You have given a number of options for us to consider and I'm very grateful for that. Thank you.
