New Year's Day menus in Bruges and Ghent

We'll be in Bruges from 30/12 to 03/01. We'll self-cater New Year's Eve, but would appreciate suggestions of restaurants open and worthwhile on New Year's Day. Another idea is that we go by train to Ghent on New Year's Day, and have lunch there. Again any recommendations much appreciated. Also any suggestions for nice jazz bars / restaurants appreciated.

You won't find any special menu on New Year's Day and it is more a matter of finding ANY "proper" restaurant open then, as opposed to cafés, bars and fast-food places (and food stalls at Christmas markets). See tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g188671-i448-k5970…

Same situation in Ghent - except, of course, for Sabrina's offer of a list, as she works for the Brugge tourist information office. Museums and tourist activities such as the Castle of the Counts (Ghent) are also closed on 1 January.

On Thursday 2 Jan, on the other hand, things should be back to normal - except for those restaurants that normally close on Thursdays anyway, and of course those that have decided to give their staff more of a holiday. This applies to both Brugge and Ghent, where Het Groot Vleeshuis (local gastronomic products shop and restaurant) remains closed until Sat 4/1: http://www.grootvleeshuis.be/nl/ - Pakhuis, on the other hand, doesn't say: http://www.pakhuis.be/en/atmosphere/home and neither does Belga Queen http://www.belgaqueen.be/Ghent.aspx - so I would advise you to check directly with anywhere you like the look of from the lists under "Bruges restaurants" and "Ghent restaurants", in the relevant forums.

I'm not sure you will find much in the way of live jazz, either: for example there is nothing here between 15/12 and 4/1: www.hotclubdegand.be/program.php… - for what is going on in Ghent at the time take a look at http://www.visitgent.be/en/home while the Gent Jazz Club has nothing till 20/1: http://www.gentjazz.com/en/ In Brugge, the Comptoir des Arts is normally open Wednesday to Sunday but NOT on Weds 1 Jan (however, it is open, exceptionally, on Monday 30 December): http://www.comptoirdesarts.be/home.html

I was in Gent on New Years Day a few years ago, and very few places in the city centre were open at lunchtime. I think a lot of places have a late night on New Year's Eve and then have New Years Day as a holiday.

I was in Bruges on New Years Day this year. With more tourists around, there were a few more places open, and there is also the Christmas Market and ice rink in the Markt.

You might want to consider going to Gent during the day on New Years Eve, and then being in Bruges on New Years Day. Depending on the weather, you can always take the train to Oostende or Blankenberge and have a nice bracing walk along the coast.

Thank you for replies. Will wait for January 2nd to visit Ghent. Must see the van Eyck altarpiece. And will maybe see what's open on New Year's Day in Bruges for lunch, without pre-booking. Wine bar sounds great - we'll definitely check that out.

I don't want to be a nuisance, but where would you shop for NYE specials if you were self-catering and staying not far from the station in Sint-Michiels area. I don't think there are any food markets as such - but traiteurs, classy supermarkes with deli counters? Oysters anywhere, or only moules?

Hi ya

Apologies, these sites are in Dutch, but the following are both excellent traiteurs:

Tete Presse - in St Michaels.

Del Dycke on Wollestraat in the centre of town.

In town, but a little walk, superb butchers:

Slagerij Maertens on Nieuwe Gentweg, on the corner with Schaarstraat

The bakers opposite Schaeverbeke is also excellent.

Bit further out in Loppem
