feast of the assumption

Hi there, just wondering if there is a procession for the feast of the assumption in Bruges, Aug. 15th, seeing that this is a holiday in the city. Is it worth the time to plan excursion around this event? Thanks much!

On 15 August there's a procession starting at 09:30 at the chapel O.-L.-V. van Blindekens (Our Lady of the Blind) in Kreupelenstraat/ Smedenstraat, taking a large candle from that church, dedicated to the Virgin, to another also so dedicated (Our Lady of the Pottery): http://www.brugsebelofte.be/ - www.openchurches.be/church_detail.asp…

The procession goes via 't Zand square, Zuidzandstraat, Steenstraat, Markt, Vlamingstraat, Academiestraat, Jan van Eyckplein, Spiegelrei and Lange Rei to Potterierei, the boundary of the former parish of Our Lady of the Pottery, where the candle is handed over at 11:00 hrs. There is then a church service at 11:30 in the chapel of O.-L.-Vrouw-van-de-Potterie and then the procession returns along Potterierei, Genthof, Jan van Eyckplein, Academiestraat, Vlamingstraat, Markt, Steenstraat, Zuidzandstraat and the Zand to Smedenstraat.

You can see photos on …blogspot.be/2011/08/assumption-day-brugse-b… and http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Brugse_belofte_(procession).

I wouldn't have thought it was unmissable, myself - but it is only shops (other than tourist shops) that are closed on public holidays: tourist activities like canal boats will still be operating and museums, the belfry etc. open, so you can always go to Brugge anyway.

Qaminari, can you please tell me if the procession will be exactly the same this year? We would like to find a good spot to stand and watch.

Thanks.

The departure has to be the same, at 09:30 on 15 August, at the Blindekens church on Smedenstraat, as does the handover at the parish boundary at 11:00 hrs and the arrival at the Potterie church at 11:30 hrs.

The traditional route is as indicated last year: Smedenstraat - Steenstraat - Markt - Vlamingstraat -Academiestraat - Jan van Eyckplein - Spiegelrei - Lange Rei - Potterierei then return Potterierei - Genthof -Jan van Eyckplein - Academiestraat - Vlamingstraat - Markt - Steenstraat - Zuidzandstraat - het Zand -Smedenstraat. Whether any detours might be required for e.g. roadworks or other construction work starting between now and August, I couldn't say: but you can always look at http://www.brugsebelofte.be/gegevens.aspx nearer the date, to see if there is any difference (it's in Dutch but you would only be looking for the order of street-names).

That's great, thank you. Can you please recommend a spot to watch, preferably early in the morning?

Did you even look at the second link given in response #1? The blogger says that the OLV Potterie Church "happens to be on our road so we were lucky to be able to watch the procession from our own doorstep." Therefore the photos were taken in Potterierei - where you can see that there weren't many spectators. Given that the procession doesn't get there till 11:00, there would be little point in going to Potterierei early in the morning - but if you want to be in at the beginning, that would be Smedenstraat (corner with Kreupelenstraat - which is a tiny alleyway more-or-less opposite the bakery, Le Pain de Sébastien) at 09:30, or between there and 't Zand square; or you could wait at one of the terrace cafés on that square, between the corner with Noordzandstraat (below the Lace Hotel, 't Zand 5) and the corner with Zuidsandstraat; the procession has to go to that side of the square to reach Zuidsandstraat, leading to Steenstraat (where it passes by Sint Salvators Cathedral).

FYI - the event was cancelled last year due to inclement weather.
