Day trip from Brussels to Bruges--- train or tour

First time in Belgium & would like to spend day in Bruges. Staying at The Dominican & have no idea which train station to use or which line we need to take there & back to Brussels. We will be going on a Tuesday in September. What is approx cost & are there many times to choose from? Once we arrive, should we walk to town or take cab or bus? Considered taking a group tour to Bruges & Ghent, but haven't read any good reviews for tour companies. Also, I'm not sure if going to both towns in one day will give us enough time in either. Appreciate your help! Thank you!

The Dominican is about 10 mins walk from Gare centrale (which you can see on the map on the hotel's website, http://www.thedominican.be/contact/location-en.html), from which there are at least 2 IC trains an hour to Brugge (final destination Oostende or Knokke/Blankenberge), cost is €28.20 return (= 2 x single price of €14.10: cheaper if you happen to be under 26 or over 65).

It only takes about 15 mins to walk from Brugge station directly to Markt, or you can follow a self-guided tour to visit Brugge on the way (e.g. http://users.compaqnet.be/Pieter.Blommaert/WandelingBruggeEn.html). Alternatively, you can take any bus marked Via Centrum from stand 1 outside the station. Cost is €2 from the bus driver or €1.30 from ticket machine or the De Lijn shop outside the station.

I don't, personally, recommend visiting both Ghent and Brugge in the same day, but if you want to, taking an escorted tour is the most reasonable way of doing it as they bring you to the centre of both cities. Otherwise, the station in Ghent is some way out of the centre and it is necessary to take a tram there and back (also, you can't interrupt a through-ticket to/from Brugge, so you need to buy separate train tickets, costing €14.10 + €15.40 = €29.50). For the rest, it just depends on whether you want commentary and to be guided around.

Thank you so much for such a complete explanation! We should be able to get there on our own! We only have 2 days in Brussels. The day of arrival, we were going to explore Brussels & the next day Bruges. Do you think a tour to both Ghent & Bruges is a better way to spend Day 2 or is there enough to enjoy in a Bruges for the day on our own? It looks breathtaking!
