Drive from Salamanca to either Coimbra or Porto?

We are going to be spending a week or so in Salamanca and I would like to try to make a side trip to Portugal for maybe a long weekend. It doesn't seem like train or bus will fit into our schedule, from what I've seen there are only a few routes from Salamanca and they take a very long time. We were thinking of renting a car in Salamanca (also returning there to drop the car off). Can anyone tell me how long of a drive it is to either Coimbra or Porto? Or is there another city closer to Salamanca that would be worth the trip?

Salamanca » Porto is 351 km (4 hours by car) and Salamanca » Coinbra is 301 Km (3h45mn by car).

You can find more route details in [http://maps.google.com]

You can use a rent car with office in Oporto (Avis, Europcar...) or in Aeroporto Porto (open 7 days week).

You have a few good options from Salamanca. Two main routes take you to Portugal: One goes north through the city of Zamora (worth visit) and enters Portugal at the Parque Natural de Montesinho from where its a short drive to the city of Bragança (worth visit). From here you can also go to Porto (about 2 hour and a half drive) but be prepared for about 15 km of mountain drive in the middle. Well worth visiting the villages around Bragança, specially the ones within the natural park. Vinhais (45 min drive from Bragança) is a small town filled with history, nature and gastronomy but is not very lively.

The other main route takes you directly to the border of Fuentes de Onoro. From here it is highway to either Porto (2h30) or Lisbon (4h30), but short after the border you can visit Guarda and the Serra da Estrela with its glacial valley. Close by to the south there are some of the most beautifull small villages in the country, filled with history: Almeida, Proença-a-velha, Penamacor, Idanha-a-velha, Monfortinho, just to name some.
