11 day trip

We are travelling to Portugal arriving in Faro at the end of September. We'd like a little beach R and R and thinking of Tavira area and then where else? happy to drive inland or up the west coast to see something different staying in Guesthouse for 1-2 days perhaps mountains or lakeside retreats. We 'd like to kayak at some point. I'm gathering Evora is worth a visit if we did do a city. Ideas and locations would be great thanks!

At Tavira you're close to Ria Formosa and some companies do kayak there. If you want to see inland go to Castro Marim, Silves, Monchique. To go to Évora do stay there at least one night, visit Mértola and Beja on your way up.

There's already a lot to see in the Algarve: www.visitalgarve.pt

Under 'downloads' you'll find a wealth of maps, brochures and ebooklets.

If you have a car, have a look at the ebooklet "rotas, tours around the Algarve" It covers the hinterland which is wonderful to visit.

There's also a nice booklet for hiking "guide to trails in the Algarve". You may want to combine the two.

Kayaking is possible on the lagune, the Ria Formosa. formosamar.com/en/….UgjLiuDaR0o

The west coast is worth a visit as it's quite different from the Tavira area. Also the Monchique area is very nice for a drive and/or hiking.

Furthermore from Tavira it's easy to drive into Spain and visit Seville. It's only 1h45 away.

(If you rent a car, you will have to mention you want to drive into Spain and you may be charged for extra insurance)

As suggested above, if you go to Evora, stay at least a night and don't forget to visit Mertola on your way up.

Thanks you all of you - all very useful. Can anyone advise me on whether Tavira are or Olhao is the best base for beach part of the trip. We would like to visit the islands but which beaches are the best in the area?

Any good wine tasting areas?

Suggestions for places to stay look awesome and any others appreciated. We aren't looking for luxury thanks

If you want to go to the islands, Olhao may be a better base. The islands Armona and Culatra (with 2 ports) can be reached by ferry. Although at the end of september the ferries are not that regular anymore, they are still running: http://www.olhao.web.pt/horariobarcos.htm

I like Culatra island the best, it still has two traditional communities (Farol and Culatra). The beaches are almost deserted and the sand is fine.

Armona is an island with many holiday houses.

Here's a guesthouse, just outside Tavira: http://www.homeaway.co.uk/p423153

If you decide to go to Évora go for the wine tasting there. Cartuxa, very close to the city it's a very good winery.
