Portugal in 7 days in November

First time in Portugal. While we would like warm weather and the beach, we realize that could very likely not happen. However, looking for suggestions about a good way to spend 7 days there. How many days should we plan for Lisbon? What are good day trips from there? Is it better to rent a car and just drive south to the Algarve - or take the train? Or should go in the Alentejo along the coast? ANy ideas appreciated.

I found a full day in Lisbon ample but some may want more. Nearby Sintra may be worth a visit.

If you go south by car, there are quite heavy charges if you do not drop the car off where you picked it up (as they have to pay someone to drive it back). There is however a good bus and train service south.

Lagos is quite a nice coastal town with a good beach, with bus and rail connections along the Algarve to other towns. Maybe hire a car some days to travel around?

Faro is certainly worth a visit but I would not stay there.

Days I would hope were nice and warm, edging on hot sometimes, but nights will be cold (but not by standards of where you live).

November in general won't warm enough for the beach. It's more a time where you find a sheltered spot to enjoy the sun. Would you share your interests please? There's a lot to see in Portugal and a road trip would give you a good option to explore.

There are national car rental companies with offices in both Lisbon and Faro (Algarve). Drop off charges are not high.

Thanks FTHW - we don't expect to be swimming or sunbathing at this time of year. However, we would like to have opportunities to be near the water for some part of our stay and just enjoy beautiful views.

Apart from that, we enjoy cultural attractions - museums, music, architecture, historical sights. Interesting places to walk around and explore. Would 2 days in Lisbon plus a day trip to Sintra work -and then a little road trip south?

We would have to come back to Lisbon.

Yes, 2 days Lisbon, 1 day Sintra, then heading South via the Alentejo Coast and return to Lisbon sounds ok 7 days.

Here are some websites with a lot of information:

"we enjoy cultural attractions - museums, music, architecture, historical sights. Interesting places to walk around and explore." in this case going to the Algarve is not the best option, you have much more to visit in Lisboa and surroundings, 2 days are not enough. And you have wonderful places "to be near the water for some part of our stay and just enjoy beautiful views." also very close to Lisboa, especially if you have a car.

Thanks - this is helpful, especially if the weather is cooler and/or rainy and it's not worth a drive south.

Here's our national weather website: http://www.ipma.pt/en/index.html

There's a 10 day forecast. Should you check it, keep checking back as it tends to change.
