Lisbon and/or Porto

Hi !

We are a couple aged around 27 y/o travelling for around 10-12 days in Europe mid-July 2014.

We will start our trip with around 6 days in Barcelona and fly out on the 6 th day to Lisbon (airlines are so cheap in Europe compare to Canada). We thought staying in Lisbon 2 nights and maybe take a flight/train/bus to Porto for another 2 days and fly out of their back to Montreal. (Air Transat is great to drop you in a EU city and bring you back from another w/o charge).

We would like to know if our trip plan is a good idea or are we just to... greedy ?

Should we fly, take the train or the bus for Porto ?

Is 2-3 days each city to ... short ?

Thank you for your time and advices !

If you can, make it 3 days in each city! See Lisbon for 2 days and take a train to Sintra (near Lisbon) for a day trip. You can't come to Lisbon without seeing Sintra, it's an Unesco heritage. From Lisbon to Porto you can take the train. It takes about 3 hours.

Spend 2 days in Porto itself and one day to see the Douro valley (also an Unesco heritage).

If your flight to Lisbon from BCN isn't booked yet I'd say at the very least drop a day from Barcelona and add it to Lisbon.

In fact you can cover Barcelona's main sights in 3 days, add an extra one for jet-lag factor so 4 days in Barcelona, 3-4 in Lisbon/Sintra + (maybe Cascais for half a day?) and then you could fit in Porto too.

We spent 2 nights (early landing, late departure so almost 3 days) in Porto a couple of years ago and loved it (we already loved Lisbon!).

We didn't go beyond Porto and immediate area, I'd looked at doing a day-trip outside up the Douro Valley but in the end decided to leave that for another trip as one day wouldn't have been enough. Of course it's easier for me to decide that, with the cheap flights, as you said, and it's even driveable from Barcelona (that's the current plan, a summer holiday one year)

Check whether it is better for you flight-wise to do Porto first or Lisbon: you can fly TAP from BCN to Porto. We had an early-morning flight so whole day for sightseeing with the hour-change too (Portugal is one hour behind Spain; like the UK). Both Porto and Lisbon are wonderful so it doesn't matter the order you see them, you won't be disappointed. And they are different from Barcelona, see which is your favourite in the end!
