Parque Peneda-Gerês and beaches with calm sea

We will be travelling in Portugal for 3 weeks from mid-June. We are still hesitating about some destinations in our itinirary.

First, we want to go to Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês for two days. We will surely go to Soajo to see the espiguieros and do a little bit of trekking around. For the second day, we are wandering if we should stay in the same area or go to Serra do Gerês or Serra da Peneda. We will rent a car to visit the park, but we would like to limit driving (up to one hour) and enjoy a nice short trail during the day to see a different scenery. What would you recommand?

Also, we won't be able to go to the Algarve, but we would like to have one or two days on a beach. If possible, we would like to find an area with calm sea to be able to swim a little (even if the water is cold). It would be nice to fit it as a daytrip from Lisbon, Porto or Coimbra. I've heard about nice beaches near Sintra or Setubal, for exemple. Which one would you recommand? We will use public transportation at that point.

Thank you so much for your advices!

For the second day of Peneda-Gerês, I think it depends on where you will be staying – if you find a different trekking route you can experience around Soajo, it may be a good option since you would not lose any more time driving. Otherwise, Castro Laboreiro area is also really beautiful, although a bit far from Soajo.

Regarding the beaches, I can advise you on the beaches around Porto: Miramar, south from Gaia, is a beautiful beach and is reachable by train – yellow line. Aguda is also a nice and calm beach spot. Water temperatures are cold in the North though, and get warmer as you head south. Figueira da Foz has very good beach spots either, as well as Nazaré, Peniche and S. Martinho do Porto. Not sure if it would be easy for you to reach these with public transportation.

Have a nice trip!

Stay 3 days in the park area, go to Soajo, Srª da Peneda sanctuary, walk around Vilarinho das Furnas in the roman road (with the roman milestones), visit Pitões das Júnias... Calm sea it's not very common in the North Atlantic coast, but there are some good days. S. Martinho do Porto is a very secluded bay, this is THE destination for kids (almost no waves). Close to Lisboa, Sesimbra and Portinho da Arrábida are good choices.
