32 yo Traveling Solo to Portugal – Oh where to go?

HIi,

I will be in Portugal from August 1 to August 7, flying out of Lisbon. I have never been to Portugal and I am so excited to have almost a week there! This being said, I'd love some recommendations on where to go/stay/see... I am looking to make this a diverse trip, in that I'd like to party, but I'd also like to see some real beauty, but at the same time meet good people along the way. Thanks for any help... Very much appreciated!

Interests:

architecture

beaches

good food/wine

nightlife

good people

culture

beauty

With a list ,ike that, do NOT venture south to the Algarve. Hundreds of thousands of people are already there and you won't find anywhere to stay.

Probaly best to divide your time between the two big cities, Lisbon and Porto, which are only 3 hours apart by train. Both have beaches within a short distance and are overloaded with cultural icons to meet the other requirements. Otherwise you will spend too much time travelling and not actually seeing or doing anything.

The items under 'Top Questions' on both city's Trip Advisor forums should give you plenty of ideas about what to see and do ina short stay in both places. As will a decent guide book that avoids the usual 'ain't it quaint' hyerbole.

Hi Jack, you could make Lisbon your base for 3 days.

Use two to see the city and venture out to Sintra on the 3rd day.

Sintra is a 'must see' and an Unesco Heritage. It's a short train ride from Lisbon.

After these days you could take the train to Porto and spend 2 days there.

Come back to Lisbon and continue to the coast, for instance Cascais, to relax before you have to fly home again.

An alternative:

If you are looking for more beach days and relaxation, partying, etc. you could split your time between Lisbon and the Algarve.

Indeed, August is high season and there will be lots of people around but it's also a great time for nightlife, beach, food/wine and people.

If you come to Vilamoura you'll find it all. We have quite a number of night clubs here.

For hotel bookings you could look at www.trivago.com which gives an overview of several booking sites.

You'll find that there are still hotel rooms available. Prices are not low in high season but I guess coming from the US you are used to this.

Some websites you could look into:

Thank you both for your help! There seems so much to see, as expected. I'll definitely set up base camp in Lisbon and spend several days there. I'll see Porto, definitely. Algarve beaches seem intriguing and beautiful. I understand it will be packed, but I can handle it for a day or two. So, Vilamoura would be the place to stay and maybe day trip to some beach?

I was thinking of renting a car in Lisbon and driving to Porto and to Algarve. Bad idea this time of year?

If you enjoy driving, you could do that. Traffic is not as bad as in the U.S.

But you can easily do without. There's a fast train from Lisbon to Porto and from Porto to the Algarve you can take a low cost flight (Ryanair). The flight is just over an hour.

After landing in Faro you could rent a car, use it in the Algarve and to drive back to Lisbon.

Vilamoura would be quite central and you could venture out from here to see more of the coast.
