Only 1 week to spend - Lisbon and Algarve?

Hello. We only have a week to spend in Portugal and have decided that 2 locations is probably best. After some research we think 4 nights in Lisbon and 3 nights in Algarve would give us a good feel for Portugal.

Ideally, we would start in Algarve but we are flying from the USA, so wonder if arriving early (after a 9 hour overnight flight) then picking up a car and driving 2-3 hours (is that about right?) may be too much. On the other hand, ending in Algarve leaves us with the issue of getting to Lisbon on check-out day in time for a flight home. Any advice??

What time of year will you be coming? The Algarve is primarily a beach and golf holiday area and can be pretty unexciting in say November. You are right, the drive down from Lisbon will be about 3 hours and consider that when returning to USA your airline's security measures may require you to be at the airport 3 hours before departure. That may even mean staying in Lisbon the previous night.

And yes, driving 3 hours down unfamiliar roads with jetlag might not be the best idea. If you decide to come to the Algarve, why not consider taking a train or bus. It's cheap (16 - 22 Euros depending on time, day and how far ahead you pre book) and that way you can arrive having perhaps slept a bit more.

Rent a car when you get down here, arrange to drop it off at Lisbon Airport or maybe go back by train or bus if schedules permit.

You might want to consider Lisbon, Silver Coast and Porto. It is easy to get back to Lisbon from Porto. The Algarve is a main touristy area for Northern Europeans where as the coast between Lisbon and Porto is very much Portugese IMO. There are some points of historic interest eg Obidos, Coinbra, Alcobasa and others. Just a thought.

It would be good to know when you are planning to come. TAP has flights between Lisbon and Faro. It takes 45 min. only. Buying separate tickets will not be not cheap but you could check if it can be included it in your intercontinental ticket.

If you prefer driving you could start with 2 nights in Lisbon, drive to the Algarve for 3 nights and finish in Lisbon with 2 nights.

The drive from Lisbon down south is fairly easy and all highway.
