Getting out of Lisbon with Bicycles

We will be in Lisbon with two boxed bicycles in spring. We do not want to ride out of Lisbon, since it is busy. Is there an inexpensive way to take bus or train get out of Lisbon, to the quiet countryside, fairly cheaply?

You can take bikes on suburban trains free of charge, but they cannot be taken on long distance trains unless disassembled and taken as 'hand luggage'.

Assuming it's Évora you are heading for, you can take your bikes free of charge across on the ferry from Lisbon city centre to Barreiro then by the suburban train to Pinhal Novo - see ferry details at www.transtejo.pt/pt/homepage/index.html and connecting train times at https:/…linha_sado.pdf

Aternatively the Fertagus trains from Lisbon across the 25 de Abril bridge to Setubal via Pinhal Novo also take bikes free - see https://www.fertagus.pt/ing/timetables

On the Intercity trains from Lisbon to Évora bikes are only taken if disassembled and suitable to be taken on board as 'hand luggage' .

You cannot cycle across either of the bridges!

I hope that helps.

We have biked in Portugal. Depending where you are interested in going, you can take the surburban trains. You will need to confirm if they take bikes. We were able to bike both north our of Lisbon from Oriente station which is just a short bike ride down the hill from the Lisbon airport. They have baggage storage at the airport, so we were able to assemble our bikes and then leaves the bags there.

On the return, we came from Setubal, which has train service that allows bikes back to Lisbon.

I checked out the information that we provided earlier, and it is not clear to me if the train from Barreiro actually goes to Evora. If you find out more, please let me know, since I would also like to start a ride from Evora.

Also, here is a link to the bike route that we did. Very enjoyable. FYI, we are credit card tourists (carry bags by stay in hotels). This route starts and ends at trains that take bikes.
