First timer - Which resort?

Hi guys,

I am flying into Faro in a couple of weeks and have never been before. So far we have just booked a hire but have no accommodation.

Not knowing anything about the area its difficult to know which resorts to look at for accommodation. Would like to avoid the really touristy high rise resorts with Irish pubs and the like. Would prefer the smaller more traditional type of resort with some nice restaurants and bars to walk to. Happy to look inland if this helps.

Please help!

Thanks. Matt.

head for monte rota / vila nova de cacela.

very quiet / traditional.

great restaurants and value for money.

not sure about hotels - villa may be best option.

car needed.

Hi Matt

We have just returned from a week in Carvoeiro. It is a beautiful little resort, a once small fishing village, a far cry from the bigger brash resorts. It has character and an abundance of lovely restaurants to suit every taste. We had a villa there but there are plenty of apartments also. Your requirements sound very similar to ours and I would highly recommend Carvoeiro, we had a wonderful time.

Hope this helps.

Mary.

Ferragudo would be worth a look, but, as with all places, try to find the place you book on a map, they can be very liberal with the descriptions and you can find yourself a long way out of any centres.

Same applies to Ferragudo, near the old town is the best area but the place sprawls for miles with new developments.

Lagos would also be an option, has some excellent restaurants in the town area, but the same applies, find the place on a map...

Another vote for Tavira. We liked it a lot. It's pretty authentic and not overly touristy. Most of the tourists are Portuguese and Spanish.

The beaches on Ilha de Tavira (Pedra del Rei), Ilha de Cabanas and Manta Rota are very nice: long stretches of fine white sand.
