Tavira is a lovely town large pedestrian area. Large inlet runs through the town which is tidal.Eating places are spaced along the river bank. the "seaside" part is the "isla Tavira" made of sand banks - worth a look. Tavira is very close to the Spanish border.

Tavira is lovely but after Olhão, is the second largest town in the Eastern Algarve. How quiet do you want?

Thing is, in that area, the 'seaside' is actually on the offshore islands.

Cabanas is liked by many, but you have to take a little ferry across the water to get to the beach. Tavira is a mile upriver and again you have to take a ferry over to the island (Ilha de Tavira) for the seaside but both are very quiet as there are no roads on the islands.

You could also look at Manta Rota and Praia da Altura. Although they are getting a bit built up, both have beaches on the mainland as there is no island in front.

I also had Manta Rota in mind but if you are planning to go in July and August, nothing is quiet.

In Tavira you have the Hotel Vila Galé Albacora, it's a little bit outside Tavira, but it's a quiet place and they have their own ferry from the Hotel to Ilha de Tavira.

Close to Cabanas - Old Town, you'll find the Club Robinson Quinta da Ria. An excellent Hotel, they also have their own ferry to the beach in front of the Hotel. And If you like golf they are 2 golf courses close to hotel. But if you want to visit the surroundings it is advisable to use a rent-a-car.

Cheaper hotel options you will find at Monte Gordo. It's close to the border with Spain. But avoid go there in July and August.
