Which area would suit us?

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are considering a trip to the Algarve in the summer but know very little about where to stay. Can anyone advise where might suit, based on the following:

- Close to a nice, sandy beach

- Restaurants and bars nearby - nothing TOO touristy but don't want it too quiet or deserted. We like to have a bit of an atmosphere when we're out and about. We are in our early 30s so our 'clubbing' days are behind us but we still enjoy a night out in bars.

- We would like to hire a car and travel around to other beaches/areas but would also like to be somewhere with amenities within walking distance

If anyone can advise which area we should be looking at then we can begin our search for accommodation. Any suggestions for accommodation would be gratefully received too - we are undecided as yet about whether to go self catering or nice hotel so any recommendations would give us a starting point.

Many thanks in advance

Alison

Try Alvor.

Suitable for couples of all ages and families. It's busy but definitely not rowdy with a large selection of really good restaurants and bars to choose from.

It's not a manufactured resort like Praia de Rocha but looks like it has evolved from the fishing village it was (and to some degree, still is), so it has some character.

There's a huge, immaculate beach with a boardwalk running along much of it's length and the river estuary.

It' within easy reach of Lagos if you want more of a bustling town atmosphere and the aforementioned PdR if you want a bit more lively (and later) nightlife.

We always go self-catering and hire an apartment privately in the Vila de Praia complex which is five minutes walk to the centre and roughly the same to the beach. Try Owners Direct, Homeaway Holiday rentals or Holiday Lettings.

Would also recommend Alvor to you both, Club alvor ria would also be a good place to stay and in the perfect location, again private rentals from the above sites. Monchique mountains within easy drive and quite Interesting. As for a hotel there Dom Joao 2 is right on the beach.

I also think Alvor sounds like just what you're looking for. There are loads of great restaurants and I'd recommend self catering.
