Which town should we stay in?

Hi all,

I'm planning an extended family trip (ages 9-94) for the end of November. We've never been to this region of Portugal. What town (and hotel) would you recommend? Our priorities:

1. Walking distance to an interesting town center with restaurants and shops

2. Walking distance to nature hikes

3. Heated pool that will be open in November (can forego this if necessary)

Thank you!

The end of November is definitely winter, even here. You should look at the bigger towns, where a large resident population ensures that you won't be finding that seaside resort out of season dead look.

The Algarve is a fairly big region - it takes 2 hours to drive from one end to the other. The tourist developments are concentrated in a band about 6 - 10 miles wide from the coast.

There are literally hundreds of hotels and self catering apartment complexes. The region welcomes over 3 million tourists a year, most in the summer and the infrastruture is here to match. Not all the hotels are open in winter however.

My suggestion would be to investigate Lagos, Albufeira and perhaps Tavira. All are 'proper' towns inasmuch as 25,000 - 30,000 people live there. Albufeira especially is a though a bit touristy but in winter I am sure you don't want to be miles fom anywhere and where there are no restaurants and bars open!

One hotel that might suit you is the Paraiso de Albufeira, which has an indoor pool. Irt's 15 minutes walk from the centre of town, with a large shopping centre within 5 minutes plus other 'amenities' like McDonald's and KFC! Many hotels here have only outdoor pools which would not be open in winter. November is not exactly beach weather here, although there is nothing wrong with a walk on a nice day.

The coastal strip is very built up and it is not easy to walk to a nature hike in many areas. If you had a rental car, it's easy to drive the 10 miles or so to escape the modernity and be right out in the country. Some towns have bus services you can use to head into the country but some careful planning is needed as buses are perhaps at most only five or six times a day away from the maina areas.

Have a look at hotel availability and prices at sites like www.booking.com or www.trivago.com etc etc.

Come back if you need clarification or explanation of anything.
