We stayed at Eden resort in an apartment in March this year. They have a shuttle to the old town a few times per day and taxi is approx, euro 6.

A rental car might be useful' for sightseeing.

depends what time of year and whether you would like them to be situated in Old Town Albufeira and outskirts of it or New Town Areias Sao Joao/Montechoro/ Oura/ St Eualaia area or inbetween both.

I would strongly recommend the Pedra dos Bicos area ... which is relatively flat and well served by bus ... most older ,long-stay people go there. Also the Worms roundabout area ... Tropical Sol ... Eirasol,... and of course the main road ... Brisa Sol, Varandahs, Perola, etc.

Hotels listed by area here ... www.albufeiraguide.yolasite.com/ and can be reviewed on TA ...

The Oura Atlantico in Albufeira is used by lots of people from England and Ireland over the winter months it is a small complex if you have to stay upstairs it is only one flight. The supermarket is around the corner and all the shops and restaurants are within walking distance. If you look up Booking.Com you should be able to pick up an apartment for about €100 for the week it also has a small indoor heated pool.

The bus stop is down the road if they want to travel around and taxis are very cheap.

Bear in mind that Albufeira is a big place, imagine a box about 2 miles across parallel with the sea and 1 mile wide going away from the sea as it were.

It is also very hilly in most areas of town, especially the old town end. Getting around by bus or taxi is cheap, although the bus system does need a bit of working out at first. There's a flat fare of €1,40 for any journey around town valid for an hour and a day pass for €4. Buses run on five routes every half hour, seven days week from 7am to 10pm in winter, midnight in summer.

A taxi will cost no more than about 5 Euros (6 at night or weekends) for any trip within the town boundary.

Supermarkets are open seven days week at least 830am to 8pm, some until 10pm so shopping won't be an issue.

Reading the post about a flat fare of 5euros and am just wondering if Montechero is classed as being within the boundary

It's not a flat fare of 5 Euros, what we are saying that a maximum 5 Euros should just about get you from anywhere to anywhere else in the town. All taxis are metered.

Montechoro is about 3.5km from the old town, and 5km from the marina. The minimum taxi fare is €3,25 for the first kilometre then 90 cents per kilometre. Add 80 cents if you ring for a taxi rather than take one from a taxi rank and all prices are increased by 20% after 10pm and all day at weekends and public holidays.

Areias village Hotel appartments, we recienly stayed there and its very close to everything! 5 minutes to the strip, taxi to old town for 6euro and beachs from 5 - 10 minutes away depending on which one they choose.

Lovely large modern apartments too! definitely worth checking out

I realise my maths doesn't quite add up in the previous post and certainly at weekends it would be 6 Euros.

If there are three or more people it is still not much more expensive than three bus fares and will be more convenient, except in the height of summer when waits for a taxi can easily be 30 minutes.
