Toll Charges?

Not sure yet if we'll use the toll road but what are the charges if we do?

Also, we'll have friends staying in Tavira while we're in Carvoeiro and we may visit them. Would it be best to use the toll road for such a long way?

Thanks.

Here's information about the toll roads: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g189111-c173877/Algar…

There's a link in it to a calculator.

It's a long way between Tavira and Carvoeiro. If you use the toll road it will take 1 hr.

A one way trip costs Euro 5.80

If you take the national road (the EN125) it will take 1 1/2 hrs. http://goo.gl/maps/ZYUp2

3. Re: Toll Charges?

Thanks for the good information, but we've got a further question related to the A22 electronic toll road and others like it else where in Portugal. It appears that you can pay your toll 48 hours after driving on the toll road and before 72 hours have past, at 'Pay Shops' or tobacco shops or Post offices. Is that right? and how does that work? do you give them you car plate id and they look it up in some computer and then you pay? do you get a receipt? can they rip you off (cheat you?) Sorry but it all seems over complicated to me. We will also be travelling north in Porto and Lisbon areas and are the electronic toll roads operated the same way there as well?

thanks.

Hi Winky, we were told to wait 3 days before paying. We paid at the post office, showing them the registration number of the car from the key fob. It was easy.

Indeed, you wait 48 hrs and then you have 5 working days to pay at either a Payshop or the Postoffice. You present your licence plate number (or car documents) and you get a receipt. No cheating possible.

Portugal has electronic toll roads but also toll roads with toll boots. For more info. you can scroll down this page: visitportugal.com/en/sobre-portugal/info-util

I assume you're using a hire car? If so then many have transponders fitted and have slightly different methods of dealing with payments.

We've just had a car from Drive 4 Fun via Economy Car Hire where we paid a 20 Euro cash payment for the hire of the transponder and basic toll charges. They then take a swipe of a credit card for any excess charges that have not been paid. Not had any issues with them but that system is, potentially, open to a rip off. As said - we've had no problems but will continue to monitor credit card payments!

If you are using a hire car I'd suggest looking at/contacting them about their own terms and conditions with electronic tolls. Obviously no effect on toll booths!

I also notice that the Communist Party have said that they will take off the tolls on the 22 if they get back in power as it's affecting tourism. Makes me feel like singing the Internationale!
