By the same token saying 'goosh' as in 'ruche' is equally off the mark!

The final 's' is incidentally a soft 'sh' sound. Don't worry, you'll here all sorts of variations even from native Portuguese.

It means "lakes", just the one in Nigeria, but the latter's pronunciation has been anglicised by the Brits' colonisation.

The stress is on the "La" not on the "gosh", but not heavily so.
