Gredos, Spain to Portugal

We will be visiting friends in Gredos, Spain towards end of May. Our trip is mostly in Spain but we thought since we were so close to Portugal that we could go by train for a few days. Any suggestions about good spot to visit accessible by train? Friends will drop us at train station out of Gredos, probably at Avila. We are interested in food, history, walking tours of historic areas, museums and maybe even an area that specializes in wonderful Portugese linens.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

From Avila you can visit Lisboa or Coimbra via Lusitania Comboio Hotel:

That is the only train across the border. There is no alternative.
