There are daily trains from Faro to Lisbon:

Alpha Pendular are the fastest and I think they are twice a day.

IC or InterCitys, I think there are four, but beware, one of them is also Regional, so it would take 5 hours...

So it can be done without any problems, but chek out www.cp.pt.

There are four daily trains from Faro to Lisbon. The only one worth getting if you plan just a day trip is the 0645 which takes exactly three hours to get to Lisbon and indeed costs about €20 each way. That's the Alfa Pendular tilting train. The return trip leaves Lisbon Oriente at 1721 and gets back to Faro three hours later.

Friends and I are doing just this trip on Saturday to see some of Lisbon in between golf!

You must book a seat in advance; you can easily go the station in Faro a few days before and do that or book on-line at www.cp.pt

if you are planning just a one-way trip the other departures from Faro are at:0855, 1355 and 1805 but these are 'ordinary' Inter-City trains and take around 4 hours. Finally on Fridays only three is an extra train Faro to Lisbon at 1700.

Lisbon to Faro at 0305 (Monday mornings only); 0821, 1321, 1721 and 1921. The 1721 is the AP express.

The trains by the way stop at two stations in Lisbon. The first stop (Entrecampos) is better for the city centre as it is only a few minutes on the Metro. The terminus at Oriente is a bit out in the wilds.

I'm leaving for portugal (algarve) this sunday from Canada. Is there any events in the next 2 weeks you can suggest? Are you a resident or a tourist?

Thanks,

Carol

Me resident.

February 24th is Carnaval - Shrove Tueday - and many towns and villages have parades, street fairs etc.

These happen on the Sunday (22nd) and also on the 24th. Exactly what depends on the place.

PS train times have changed since 2006 - daily trains now leave Lisbon ORIENTE station for Faro at 0820, 1020, 1320, 1720 and 1840 with an extra train at 1920 on Fridays only.

These all stop in Tunes (connection for Portimao and Lagos), Albufeira and Loule. Connection at Faro for Tavira, Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo Antonio.

Details and reservations (compulsory) at www.cp.pt
