Bus system

The last few years we've visited Malta and the bus system was both very cheap and very useful, I would prefer not to drive and like to use the public bus systems to get around.

Is the bus system in Madeira any good, reliable, on time etc? Does it go to the majority of tourist destinations?

Is there some kind of weekly bus ticket and if so how much for adults and children. Are they cost effective and worth buying or is it better to buy single tickets?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, the bus service is reliable. It goes to most, but not all places on the island. The Three Peaks, Rabacal etc. are not served by public transport. Apart from the local buses in Funchal, where it is cheaper to buy multitickets, just buy single tickets from the driver. There are several bus companies and no ticket that covers them all.

It's generally excellent. There are very frequent town buses for Funchal and the immediate area (including Monte, Botanic Gardens etc), and good rural services to many places on the island - as apt22 says not the more remote destinations, and services to the far western side (e.g. Porto Moniz and Prazeres) are few and take a long time.
