Just back from a delightful 2 weeks in Madeira. First week was glorious, wall to wall sunshine and temperatures in the 30's, second week overcast but dry and actually more suitable for getting around and about, just a bit disappointing for the sun worshippers.
Funchal seemes as busy as usual and even more so when the cruise ships were in. Work on the Promenade is a bit disruptive, particularly at the cable car end but it is well screened off so is not intrusive. The only drawback is they seem to be working weekends and holidays so don't expect too much peace and there was some seriously heavy banging going on.
Also the road from the Av do Mar up to the roundabout at the end of Av. do Infante is closed for major works so all buses are going through the tunnel and back down to the roundabout before heading up Av do Infante to the hotel district. Also there are no bus stops on Av do Infante until the orange petrol station so go to the Av do Mar for your buses.
Finally we had a wee surprise when we checked in with Thomson at Glasgow airport. They have now decided to weigh hand luggage and charge for anything over 5kg! Nice people eh! Fortunately we were just on the line but the couple in front had to pay a surcharge. So be warned - I didn't notice anything on their website but it is no doubt buried deep somewhere so they can screw a little more money out of you. I thought it was just the Ryanairs and Easyjets of this world that used these underhand tactics but it seems they are now all at it.
Well we will be off to the luggage shop for lighter hand luggage for next year. More expense.
